

David Joshua Penn, known to many as Josh, passed away on July 4, 2025, after a brief illness. Born on March 9, 1971, in Bethesda, Maryland, Josh was the beloved son of Dr. Gerald Penn and the late Joyce Penn. He was raised in Upper Arlington, Ohio and, as an adult, made his home in Beaver Creek, Ohio.
Josh was a proud “lifer” at Columbus Academy, attending every grade level from 1977 until his graduation in 1989. He continued his education at American University in Washington, DC, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Justice and Psychology in 1993. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1996.
Josh dedicated over 26 years to LexisNexis, initially as a case law editor and later as a systems engineer, where his commitment to the company and the combination of his legal and technical expertise were highly valued.
A practicing Roman Catholic, Josh was a member of St. Andrew Parish in Upper Arlington. He was also an avid supporter of the Second Amendment and a passionate collector of tactical and historic firearms.
Josh is survived by his father, Dr. Gerald M. Penn; his brother, Professor Gerald B. Penn; and many loving family members and friends. He will be remembered for his mischievous sense of humor, his loyalty and the warmth he brought to all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Josh will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 10AM at Saint Christopher Church, 1420 Grandview Ave, Columbus, OH 43212, with burial to follow at 12:00PM at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S High St, Lockbourne, OH 43137. A reception will be held at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Rd, Columbus, OH 43221, from 1PM-3PM.
