
David Edwin Young, age 91, died March 6, 2010. He was born April 14, 1918 in Robinson, IL to Edwin S. and Christine Link Young. He graduated from Kansas University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. David was the President of the KU chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity. After college, he entered the United States Army Air Corps. He was invited to fly with surviving members of the Lafayette Escadrille. David served in World War II in Africa and Italy with the 47th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force and the reserves thereafter, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war, he served for over 30 years with Columbia Gas Systems and its predecessors, retiring as Executive Vice President. David was always active in service, church, and civic organizations in the many cities to which his work took him and his family. He was loved by the extended Porter family and all who knew him. All who met him knew his blue eyes, wonderful bass voice, unassuming sense of humor, and caring, gentle soul. He loved his family, America, traveling the world with Helen, cars, and learning. David led a valuable and complete life. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife of 54 years, Helen Elizabeth Heard Young. David is survived by his daughter, Christine (Jerry) Pasek; son, Timothy (Kitty) Young; grandchildren, Maggie (friend Daniel Johnston) Pasek of Dunedin, New Zealand, Jeff (Christine) Pasek of Seattle, Ned Young of San Francisco, Liza Young and Mac Young of Columbus; great-granddaughter, Helena, of Seattle; sister, Miriam Pack-Kelsey of Kansas; and many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at First Community Church, Burkhart Chapel, 1320 Cambridge Blvd. A reception will follow.
