

Diane Kaufman Fredette of New York City, on February 6, after a valiant 7-month battle with cancer. A daughter of John Kaufman and Betty (Reddington) Kaufman, Diane was born in Middletown, Ohio. A 1974 graduate of Upper Arlington High School, she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from The Ohio State University, and a master's degree in advanced architectural design from Columbia University. She was an architect licensed in the states of Ohio and New York, NCARB Certified, and a co-founding partner of the firm Fredette Architects, PLLC, in Manhattan, where among other projects she consulted on the World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center construction project. She was LEED® BD+C Certified in the design and construction phases of green buildings, and consulted extensively on sustainable strategies and projects. A former professor and chairperson for the Construction Management and Facilities Management Department in the School of Architecture at Pratt Institute in New York, she also taught courses on architecture and sustainability, served as a design critic and juror for several universities, and conducted workshops and lectures on sustainable practices. Before starting her own firm, Diane worked for several major Columbus architectural firms. She also worked for Perkins Eastman Architects in Manhattan. Diane was a member of the American Institute of Architects. She served as a curriculum reviewer for the Urban Green Council and a course reviewer for the U.S. Green Building Council. She served on the Board of Directors for the Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation, as a member of the Advisory Council for Career and Technical Education for the New York City Department of Education and the Greater New York Construction User Council. She is preceded in death by her mother, Betty Kaufman; step-mother, Shirley Behnke Kaufman; mother-in-law, Grace Fredette; father-in-law, Russell Fredette; and brother-in-law Lynn Thomas. She is survived by her husband Russell Fredette of Manhattan; father, John Kaufman and sister, Kathy (Gary) Baird, all of Upper Arlington, Ohio; brother, Joe (Laurie) Kaufman of West Chester, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Karyn Thomas of Saratoga Springs, New York; Susan (Robert) Lesson of Grosse Ile, Michigan; and Melinda (James) Jubert, of Albany, New York. Other survivors include: nieces Linda Baird (Chuck Meyer) of Brooklyn, New York; Regan (Michael) Garyantes of Cecelia, Kentucky; Jennifer (Luis) Pabon and Tricia Thomas, all of Saratoga Springs, New York; and Kristina (Keith) Moore of Wethersfield, Connecticut; nephews Jim Baird of Washington DC, Sean (Elizabeth) Lesson, of Grosse Ile, Michigan; Andy Lesson of Stafford, Virginia; Alex (Sally) Kaufman of San Diego, California: Zachary (Michelle) Kaufman of Bend, Oregon; Martin Kaufman (fiancé Sarah Tagg) of Findlay, Ohio; Joseph Kaufman and Jacob Kaufman, both of West Chester, Ohio; as well as three step-siblings, three great-nieces, seven great-nephews, and many cousins.
