

Dr. Duane N. Sunderman, age 83, of Hilliard, OH passed away suddenly July 22, 2011. He was born July 14, 1928 in Wadsworth, OH, and graduated from Fort Wayne North Side High School. He received his A.B., M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, and graduated from the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Kearsarge (CV-33) and later as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. He was the former Director of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Director of Kansas City Operations for Midwest Research Institute, and worked for 28 years in research and management roles for Battelle Memorial Institute. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Testing and Materials. He was a founding member of the Hilliard Presbyterian Church and a former choir member, elder, and usher of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Richard B. and Caroline N. Sunderman, daughter-in-law Lynn Cuccaro Sunderman, and niece Brenda Dillon Davis. He is survived by loving wife of 58 years Joan H. Sunderman; daughter Christine (Jeff) Boruvka, sons David D. Sunderman, Richard G. Sunderman; sister Betty (Jim) Dillon; grandchildren Katie (Chris) Buckholtz, Elise Boruvka, Holly Sunderman, and Michelle Sunderman; niece Debbie (Paul) Yeoman and nephew John Dillon. Memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. where family will receive friends at 5 pm until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Covenant Presbyterian Church permanent funds ministry.
