Edward M. Miller died peacefully at home on Dec. 16, 2017. He was born to Edward Michael Miller and Dula Queen Switzer on Dec. 21, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio. He grew up in a family of modest means and graduated from Youngstown Cheney High School in 1946. His childhood instilled in Ed the importance of hard work, inspiring him in life to always achieve more. He held his first job at 13 which would help him finance his first lathe for what would become a lifelong passion in wood turning. He was known for keeping his first earned dollar in his back pocket throughout all of his days.
After high school, Ed attended The Ohio State University; becoming a Buckeye fan for life, earning undergraduate and medical degrees. Upon graduating from medical school, he enlisted in the U.S.A.F and served as a flight surgeon from 1953 to 1955 transporting polio patients around the world in an iron lung. Ed's medical field of choice was Pathology, in which he worked with remarkable dedication for over 40 years at White Cross Hospital, which became Riverside Methodist Hospital. In addition to his work at Riverside, Ed owned and managed Johannsman Miller laboratories and was an emeritus professor of Pathology at OSU. Ed was highly respected in the medical community as an expert pathologist. His colleagues sought him out for his experienced and skillful opinions and trusted the quality of his work based on his reputation.
In retirement, Ed turned his focus and passion to wood collecting, wood turning and perennial gardening. Ever motivated by quality, Ed sought only the best in his pursuits. From the exquisite international raw materials of his woodwork, he crafted bowls of classic forms and finished them to bring out the natural intrinsic beauty of the wood. He was not boastful of his own accomplishments, but proud to share the products of his hard work and dedication. Ed found joy and contentment in keeping his mind sharp and his hands busy. He will be remembered by family, friends and loved ones as a consummate gentleman, gracious host, purveyor of cookies and sweet treats, lover of Caribbean sand and scuba, dexterous crossword decoder and admirer of natural beauty. He will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved him. Preceded in death by daughter Linda Chakeres, Ed is survived by wife, Nancy, children Cindy Luna, Edward and Linda, Don and Susan, Kathy, Tom and Wendy, son-in-law Donald Chakeres, 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, step sons Matt and Jennifer Simon and Jason Simon, and brother Robert E. Miller.
