

Edwin C. Smith, age 94, of Grove City, died Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Brookdale Pinnacle. He was born September 28, 1923 in Grove City, Ohio to the late Frank and Emma (Davis) Smith. He was a 1941 graduate of Grove City High School where he played the trumpet in their first ever marching band. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and spent 3 and a half years flying B24 missions in the South Pacific, China, Japan, and the Philippines. Ed was one of the first foot mail carriers and retired from the mail service. He was a founding member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grove City and served in the role of choir director and organist for over 50 years. As a whole, he was a part of the music program at church for 70 years. He was a charter member of the Grove City Barber Chorus, directed the Grove City Community Chorus for 2 years, played trumpet for 30 years in big bands and combos, and played at Schoedinger Funeral Home for over 25 years, all while having no formal music education. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Donna Smith; and brother, Glenn Smith. Ed is survived by his children; Christine (Randall) Craig of Indiana, Jeffrey (Melissa) Smith of Michigan, Scott (Teresita) Smith of Grove City, grandchildren; Lisa (Buddy) Lloyd, Brian (Julie) Craig, Benjamin, Andrew, Zachary Smith, step-grandchildren; Tobriah Dunlap, and Jean Bowers, great-grandchildren; Bailey Bennett, Carly Bennett, Gavin Craig, Aubrey, Ashtyn, Avery Craig, step-great-grandchildren; Hannah and Jordan Dunlap; and many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church of Grove City. Contributions in Ed's memory may be made to The Gideons International (Camp #U13349).
