She was born December 2, 1933 in Zanesville, Ohio to the late Julia (Dietenbeck) and Sylvester Burkhart. Eleanor was a 1951 graduate of Bishop Rosecrans High School in Zanesville and became a registered nurse with the Good Samaritan School of Nursing, class of 1955, also in Zanesville. She was employed at Good Samaritan and Bethesda Hospitals in Zanesville, University Hospital in Columbus, St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton, California and First Community Village in Columbus. Her employment at Ford's Flowers in Zanesville also fulfilled her love for floral design, a lifelong activity that she continued to enjoy as her favorite pastime while a resident at Sunrise. Eleanor had many artistic talents and loved to decorate and entertain. She made everyone feel at home.
Eleanor married Walter A. Flack on August 24, 1968, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Zanesville, Ohio. After moving to New Albany, Ohio in 1985, they were active in the Young at Heart group at Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church; they also served as greeters there and Eleanor was a Eucharistic Minister. They enjoyed traveling, collecting antiques, and anything related to the Ohio State Buckeyes. They were blessed with many friends during their lifetime, and always enjoyed sharing holidays and events with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who also passed away at Sunrise, on November 6, 2014. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Oscar and Ilo Wood Flack; brothers Bernard Burkhart, John Burkhart, Tom Burkhart; sisters-in-law Mary Burkhart and Sue Burkhart; and great nephew Brandon Merriam. Surviving are her brothers Larry (Laurel) Burkhart and Jim (Ann) Burkhart; sisters Rose (Bill) Parry and Mary (Jim) McKee of Zanesville, Ohio; sister-in-law Sue Burkhart of Powell, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Sunrise of Gahanna and Bella Care Hospice for their patient and loving care. We'd like to say thank you to all of the people along the way, those who loved her, cared for her, and laughed with her, especially Karen McCafferty and Joe Allgeier. We are grateful to the children of St. Matthews School whose cards brought much happiness to Eleanor.
