Born March 13, 1939 in Youngstown, Ohio, Gene was the son of Martin and Mary (Duda) Klimko. Gene grew up in Campbell, Ohio and was a 1957 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and a 1961 graduate of The Ohio State University. He went on to earn a PhD (1967). From there he became an Assistant Professor in the Statistics Department at Purdue University. In 1973, Gene began work as an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at Binghamton University (SUNY) until his retirement in 2014. Gene made significant contributions to research on algorithmic solutions and numeric computation for problems in probability theory.
He had a passion for teaching, not only as a professor, but also towards his nieces and nephews. He loved playing cards; group solitaire as a family was a staple to his visits as well as many other card games. He loved teaching games of the mind like chess, checkers, cribbage and baking the best bread ever! Gene was devoted to his faith, his companion Mary, and extended family. He traveled many places in his life but always made time to attend his nieces and nephews high school graduations, weddings, and even some college graduations! Gene was a great story teller, and his stories were entertaining, but also contained substance and wisdom.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Mary and his life-long companion Mary Breckler. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Charles and Lawrence; and his sisters: Virginia, Loretta and Mary Delores.
