

Gary Charles Stokes, age 71, Conway, SC, formerly of Columbus, OH, lost his battle with cancer September 29, 2012. He was born December 13, 1940 in Columbus, OH to the late John and Mary (Soder) Stokes. He graduated from East High School where he was a member of the State Champion Cross-Country Squad. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Adjutant General’s office. Gary retired at age 48 from the Dept. of Highway Safety after 30 years of service. He enjoyed bowling, was a youth bowling coach and won a game show called Bowling for Dollars. An avid golfer, he played several leagues at Sunbury and Conway and recently made his first hole in one! He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He is survived by his loving wife, Mavella (MacDonald) Stokes; children, Kim (Mark) Bertino; John (Leslie) Stokes; grandchildren, Delaney and Makenna Bertino; and Colin and Donovan Stokes; brothers, Tom (Diane), Rick (Carol) and Ed (Nancy) Stokes; Uncle Chuck and Aunt Kathleen Stokes; Aunt Janet Hambleton; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Rev. Jon) Bell and Kathleen Kaser; nieces, nephews, golfing buddies, extended family and good friends. Viewing is 2-4 and 6-8pm Thursday, October 4, 2012 and funeral services will be held 10am Friday, October 5th at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH 43221. At the family’s suggestion, in lieu of flowers, please do something special for someone you love.
