

Georgia Winfield Shaw, age 84, currently of Gahanna, Ohio, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2011. She was born April 26, 1926 in Washington D.C. to the late Kenneth and Clara (Hudson) Winfield. A woman of confidence, Georgia stepped out into what was truly a man’s world at the time. She attended Catholic University in Washington DC and followed her dream of becoming an architectural draftsman. She was the first female to be employed by the Architect of the Capitol of the United States of America. Georgia was a woman of high ethics who generously supported, through her energy as well as financially, human and animal rights, environmental issues, and social welfare causes. Georgia was preceded in death by her daughter, Elisabeth Shaw, her brother, Kenneth Winfield, Jr. and a niece, Sally Bannister. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Shaw, and her daughter’s life partner, Diann Nelson-Houser, who she called her “daughter outlaw;” step-grandchildren, John and Amelia Houser; sister, Betty (Bill) Jacoby; nieces and nephews, Georgia (Jack) Robertson, Frank (Kelli) Bannister and Mike (Theresia) Jacoby; grand nieces and nephews, James (Holli), J.T. & Lindsey Robertson, Vanessa & Victoria Jacoby, and Emily, Adam, and Alister Bannister. Funeral services will be held at 12pm Friday, March 11, 2011 at Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 N. Fairfax Dr., Arlington, VA 22203; interment National Memorial Cemetery, Falls Church, VA.
