(Then) Commander Goetz was Chaplain aboard USS John F. Kennedy during my time serving there.  He developed relationships with me and several others through a weekly Bible study and regular services.  I hold fond memories of his time on Big John.  My sincere condolences to all of his family members.

While Herb was serving in Washington as the active duty chaplain with oversight of the Naval Reserve Chaplains program, I was his counterpart in New Orleans sharing in these duties with over 500 chaplains of that community. He worked tirelessly in that role and was highly respected by all who knew him.  In 1960 he and I were also members of the same class for indoctrination into the Chaplain Corps.Therefore, it was a friendship for over 60 years.  May our Lord's comfort and blessings be with you.

To the family of Chaplain Goetz,

I thank God for Chaplain Herb Goetz. As a young sailor aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) in 1974, Chaplain Goetz heard me playing the piano in the crew's lounge one day. He asked me if I would be interested in working for him in the chaplains' office and ship's library, which would then include playing the organ for both the Protestant and Roman Catholic services aboard the ship. God used Chaplain Goetz in guiding me to eventually study for the ministry and become a Navy chaplain myself. I have many fond memories of working for Chaplain Goetz during our period in the shipyards (1974-1975) and then our 1975-76 Mediterranean deployment. May our gracious God grant comfort and peace to his family through faith in our Savior Jesus Christ, who overcame death and the grave and gives us the assurance of eternal life with Him. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate!

Sally and I were sorry to hear of Herb’s passing. We both know the pain of losing parents and spouse. One of my fondest memories of Herb was during a spring break trip in Jacksonville when he came to pick up kids after practice in the fourth passenger van the team had rented for the week. The problem was we had only rented three vans. Herb had inadvertently taken someone else’s van to come pick up kids. It gave us all a big laugh, even Herb after he realized his mistake. As always, he was gracious and apologized to the actual renters of the van when he returned to the hotel.
Herb was always a class act. I know Matt and Mary Ann and the rest of his family will miss him terribly.

Donna and I were so sorry to hear about Herb's death.  We will never forget the beautiful tribute he gave to our father at Spring Grove Cemetery. It was a wonderful day for our family to be together and left many precious memories for our children. We will keep all of you in our prayers at this difficult time. May Herb's memories and God's peace bring you comfort.

So sorry to hear of Herb's passing. He was a friend of mine and classmate in Grade and High School. Often thought of him over the years. We all knew that his accomplishments would be great....his Bio proves it all. Rest in peace, dear friend, Herb. Martha-McGraw Thompson.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  Rev Goetz served at St Michaels in Baltimore, oh, many years ago and we loved to hear him tell us so many memorable life moments in his sermon.  I also read his book and it was awesome.  Ple accept my deepest sympathy.
