Ira Lee Grayson, III, DVM, age 77, died unexpectedly Monday, April 3, 2023 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital following a short illness. He was born May 1, 1945 in Wilmington, DE, son of the late Georgette and Ira L. Grayson, Jr. Ira was director of Animal Laboratory Medicine at OSU for several years and retired as a science teacher with the Newark City Schools after many years. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dr. Debra Grayson and brothers-in-law, David Smith, Daniel Smith and Douglas Smith. Ira proudly served in the US Navy (Submarine Service) from 1962-1969 on the USS Tecumseh and was honorably discharged. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master’s Degree in Laboratory Animal Medicine from The Ohio State University and received his teaching degree from Capital University. Ira was a member of VFW # 2505 Lancaster and American Legion Post # 677, Lithopolis. Ira’s family is grateful for the care and kindness he received from the nurses, doctors and members of the MICU staff at Mount Carmel East. Family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Monday, April 10, 2023 and 12:30-1:30 pm Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at SCHOEDINGER EAST, 5360 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus, OH 43232, where funeral service will be held 1:30 pm Tuesday. Pastor Daniel Hille officiating. Interment to follow at Obetz Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Columbus Area Humane Society or Mount Carmel East Palliative Care or Hospice, in Ira’s memory.
