Memories of Mom

*. Mom sang loud and proud--and often off-tune.
*  Mom, who never attended university, watched every single Buckeye football game as far back as I can remember--to the Woody Hayes era.
* Mom softened over time perhaps due to her care taking of elderly and children.  She started working when most people her age were about to retire.  
* After my parents divorced, when I was 10, Mom took care of me; and I-her.
*Mom always had a pet, dog or cat, and watched my brother's dog when he traveled for work.
* Mom had a keen mind and (much to our chagrin) memory all of her life.

She was there.  
Home was where Mom was.    Every holiday, vacation day, or family gathering was where Mom was.  Dinner was a time to socialize and trade family stories, history, and tall tales.    Mom was born into hard times, depression era England.  But one didn't know any better.  You did what you had to and didn't complain.  

Shortly after her 16th birthday, WWII started and stole the fun years of her youth.  Or perhaps it was the beginning of a personal adventure.  Within two years, she enlisted in the Royal Air Force.  One of her numerous jobs was in the Air Operations room plotting ongoing air battles on the board.  At this time she was able to rub elbows with the likes of air ace Group Captain Douglas Bader.  

Later in the war, while billetted in Reading, she was able to attend Glenn Miller's last concert before his disappearance.  It was during this time she met our father.  They were married in Reading and several weeks later he shipped out for the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1946, our mother was like other "War Brides" and left for the States by ship, and joined Dad in his hometown, Janesville Wisconsin.  When Dad was called into the Air Force Mom begin her career as a military wife. 
 
Throughout all the moves involved in military life, Mom was there.  No matter where Dad was, she's the one we came home to.  Dinner was on the table at five o'clock sharp and don't be late.  We learned promptness.

For all the baseball games, football games and various school activities, Mom was there.  I was barely 18 when I awoke in the hospital after a severe accident and Mom was there, fussing over me trying to get me to eat something she had brought from home.

One by one we began our gypsied careers that took us away from home.  During the years for many of the holidays, we came back to our Mother's home.  It was the central place to meet, share dinners and stories and tell tales.

A while ago I lost my wonderful wife.  It was my Mom who cared for my dog and provided a sense of comfort knowing he was in good hands while I was gone on my trips.

And now our Mother is gone and we are left to comfort each other with stories, histories, and tall tales. We'll reminisce and laugh and feel sorrow.   For us, Mom was there.  I'll miss you Mom.  Love, Adrian
