Jack Elliott Pocock, 84, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2010. He was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Jack believed that kindness was the mightiest force in the world and for those who really knew him, the measure of the man was a rare combination of gentleness, quiet humor, love of people, and an infectious optimism for each and every day. When asked, “What is the one thing you would never change about the way you’ve lived your life?” Jack simply replied, "liking people.” His appeal came from the fact that he lived what he believed. He always had a positive word about everyone he knew and his integrity and welcoming spirit led to many lasting friendships. Jack's life was enriched by family, friends, a passion for gardening, and a continual willingness to help others. Jack retired from Central Silica in 1991 as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Active in the community, Jack was a past officer of Kiwanis, the Southeastern Ohio Ceramic Society, and many charitable organizations. While living in Zanesville, he was a trustee of Bethesda Hospital and an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. Prior to his death, he remained active in Kiwanis, the Beta Theta Pi Alumni Group, the Worthington Presbyterian Church and the Worthington Hills Country Club. Jack was born in Delaware, Ohio on November 18, 1925 to the late Ralph and Gertrude Pocock. Prior to entering the Navy, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, he completed his formal education at the Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years Marijane Williams Pocock, his daughter, Cheryl Brown (Michael Chalcraft), son Robert (Cindy) and two grandchildren: Andrew Pocock (Megan) and Katherine Heydlauff (Jeffrey). He was preceded in death by a son, Frederick, and son-in-law, William J. Brown, the former Attorney General of Ohio. Every good husband, father, and friend is a successful man. Those of us who were blessed to have known Jack will forever cherish his memory. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 24 at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the HomeReach Hospice, 180 E. Broad St. Columbus, OH 43215 or the charity of one’s choice.
