James Douglas "Doug" Sasfy, 85, of Reynoldsburg, OH, died peacefully of natural causes at home on January 1, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Doug was born in Selma, Alabama, September 27, 1935. He attended West Point Military Academy, class of 1959. Following West Point, Doug had a dedicated career in retail distribution with Montgomery Ward and JC Penney, until his retirement in 1995. Doug's true passion was golfing- he was a member of Willow Run Golf Course for close to 40 years. He was known to play more than 260 rounds a year until back surgeries sidelined him.
Doug's family was his pride and joy. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports and was always the first to arrive at any family gathering. He enjoyed watching football, cheering for the Green Bay Packers and The Fighting Irish. Doug was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, but his favorite Sunday morning activity was gathering with "CBC", a breakfast club with his sons and close friends.
Doug is preceded in passing by his first wife, Judith Martin (1986) to whom he was married 25 years; his grandson Dustin Sasfy; and stepson Scott Whalen.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Nancy (McClary) Sasfy, to whom he devoted 32 years; his children Stephen (Ann) Sasfy, Reynoldsburg; Christine Thrall (Rob), Hilliard; Karen Crognale (Corey), Blacklick; Thomas (Gretchen) Sasfy, Westerville; Jennifer Sasfy (Mike Krukowski), Westerville; Matthew, Newark; and Kathy, Columbus; step-sons Jim (Anita) and Rob (Jen) Whalen; step-daughter Annette Whalen; 29 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brothers Steve (Carol), Frank, and Joe (Marianne) Sasfy; and special friends Dave and Dee Strawser, Camille Dandurand, and Father Dan Ochs.
A funeral service for Doug will be held at 11am on Friday, January 8, 2021, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1051 South Waggoner Road, Reynoldsburg, OH, 43068. Social distancing will be enforced and masks will be required for all in attendance. A live webcast of the service will be available on St. Pius's website. Interment will follow at Glen Rest Memorial Estate.
The family would like to thank Synergy Home Care and Heartland Hospice for the excellent care they provided dad in his final days.
Doug supported dozens of charitable causes with his generosity. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in Doug's memory.
