James Jay (Mike) Merchant, age 69, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2022. He was born on November 1, 1952 in Riverside, California. Mike graduated from Kenton High School in 1970. He received a degree in sociology/criminology from OSU in 1976, while living in the stadium dorm where he made many lifelong friends. He bicycled the US across and back in 1976. Cycling was a lifelong love that he shared with his wife, Lynn; son, Neil; niece, Lauren; and many friends.
Mike created fishing kayaks that he shared with his friends for long days on the water. He loved music as demonstrated by his extensive record collection. Mike loved pheasant hunting with his beloved French Brittanys, Maude and Bettye. While not a religious man, he lived his life with great integrity, found difficult work challenging, and could fix about anything.
In August 1979, he married Lynn Hiller in Kenton, Ohio. They have resided for 43 years in Columbus. They have one son, Neil (Lindi Martin) of Portland, Oregon. Survivors are his mother, Phyllis Kingman; sisters, Carol McKinley (Paul), Jayne Merchant (Randy Verhoff), Lee Pace and Tammy Mitchell (Joe). He also leaves behind 2 step brothers, Denny and Kenny Kingman; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Holcomb (Jim) and Laura Rigel (Bob); along with 7 nieces and nephews.
Mike has requested cremation with no service. His family would like to thank the MANY friends who visited him at home prior to his death and also his loving caregivers, Lindi Martin, Paige Holcomb, Jayne Merchant and home hospice nurse, Leah.
