

James Dean Proffitt, age 53, passed away at his home on Friday, September 17, 2010. He was born in Columbus on September 16, 1957, and was a graduate of Westerville North High School. Jimmy was crime prevention coordinator for the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, and he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Crimestoppers. He was an avid Ohio State fan and had a room in his home dedicated to the Buckeyes. He was very passionate about his family’s Cherokee heritage and always flew an American Indian flag in their yard. He was generous, always willing to help out a neighbor, and he will be remembered as a prankster with a great sense of humor. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 17 years, Anita Proffitt; step-daughters, Elvira Jean Barker (Glenn Beal), and Ashley Dawn (Michael) Gilmore; siblings, Jerry Proffitt, Linda (Sam) Osborne, and Danny (Barbara) Proffitt; cousin, Roger Blevins; grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Tabetha, Katelin, Brittany, Nathan, Glenn Beal II, and Isabella; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Otis Proffitt; mother, Ethel McAfee; and step-father, Floyd “Buzz” McAfee. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna.
