Shu came to Columbus, OH at an early age. He attended East High School of Columbus, OH and after graduating enlisted in the United States Army. After his service in the military, he enrolled into a skilled trade school as an apprentice/journeyman for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 189. He was a member of the union for over 25 years until he officially retired in May 2005. During retirement, Shu enjoyed traveling, fishing, and hanging out with friends. He has been a long-time sports fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State University Buckeyes football teams. Shu had a lot of hobbies and loved to study/observe how different things work/operate which led to him working on cars, doing home repairs, and watching Court/Judge shows. Although he could give you a look or stare that could make you quiver and/or not want to cause any mess with him, Shu loved to tell jokes and could always see the humor in his suffering.
He is preceded in death by his parents James T. Shumate and Lula Mae Shumate, uncles, aunts, nephew, and cousins.
Shu leaves behind to cherish his memories the mother of his children and wife for over 25 years Janice E. Shumate; his children Jermaine T. Shumate (Margeret), Janalisa Menefee (Cyrano) and Janmaria Shumate (Toney); grandchildren Adrian, Cierra, Jermaine, Brishan, Joshua, Jamal, Janjai, Caleb, Janessa and Immanual; 7 and 1/2 great grandchildren; brothers William Stinchcomb (Latonya) and Michael Shumate (Louise); sisters Louise Duff (John), Hazel McFadden (Virgil) and Betty Shumate; and a hosts of cousins, nephews and nieces.
