

Jean Elizabeth Sanborn Lombard. Born May 24, 1918. Passed away peacefully on May 4, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio, just twenty days before her 100th birthday. Preceded in death by husband, Dennis Lombard; parents, Judge Ralph and Marion Sanborn; siblings, William Sanborn, Marjorie English Sheldon, John Sanborn, and Marion (Weezy) Sanborn. Survived by daughter, Lyn Lombard (Andrew) Palka; sons, Mark Lombard and Dick Lombard; grandsons, Weston (Bridget) Lombard and Stefan Lombard; granddaughters, Alexandra Lombard and Sophia Lombard; and great-grandchildren, Owen, Solomon and William. Jean was born in East Cleveland, Ohio and lived her early years in Shaker Heights before moving to Upper Arlington in 1927. She graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1936, attended Denison University for two years and then the Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1940.Married William Nosker in 1941. He served as a Major and squadron commander in World War II and died on a combat mission in Italy. Served as private secretary to the Resident Manager of Ternstedt Division (now Fisher Body) of General Motors Corporation. Married Dennis Lombard in 1951. They were married for 50 years until his death. Dennis owned and operated three furniture stores in Upper Arlington. Jean was involved in many community activities. She was chairwoman of the Jones Junior High Archives Project, sustaining member of Beaux Arts and Women's Board member for the Columbus Museum of Art, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority alumni association, treasurer and chairman of Parents League, Women's Board of Central Ohio Council, Boy Scouts of America, and member of First Community Church, where she served on the Women's Board, Nominating Committee, Group M (as secretary) and Group Y. She was the first chairman of "Tradition Hall", which honored illustrious graduates of Upper Arlington High School. She served as co-editor of the book History of Upper Arlington and co-authored a chapter on early community life. She served as secretary of the Upper Arlington Historical Society. She was honored as one of five "Northwest Women of the Year" by the Rotary Club of Upper Arlington in 1980. Jean and Dennis lived in Naples, Florida in the winter months for many years. She originated an annual dinner party in Naples for Columbusites, which grew from 30 to 200 participants over 10 years. Jean also attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Upper Arlington. She was raised a Christian Scientist, which gave her a positive and optimistic outlook on life. Jean believed in God's power and protection. She had only to look outside to see God's handiwork in her flower garden, with its gorgeous colors, that she thoroughly enjoyed. It was also obvious in her watercolor paintings of flowers and landscapes. Jean's favorite musicians were Dennis Lombard (trumpet), George Gershwin (composer), Cole Porter (composer and lyricist), Bobby Hackett (cornet), and Frank Sinatra (vocalist). She had an uncanny recall of tunes - old, new and obscure. Her hobbies included gardening, dried flowers, swimming, tennis, bird-watching, travel, bridge, painting, genealogy, and playing Mexican train with her wonderful friends. Her ancestors emigrated from England to this country between 1632 and 1639. Her lineage is traced back to Eric the Forester of Denmark. She compiled family albums for her cousins and relatives from both sides of her family, containing pictures and biographies of many relatives. She was very proud of several illustrious relatives, including her grandfather Col. John H. Herrick, a renowned attorney, state senator and Civil War hero, Myron T. Herrick, Governor of Ohio and U.S. ambassador to France, and Cassius M. Clay, U.S. ambassador to Russia. A majority of this obituary was written by Jean Lombard. The family is extremely grateful to the special caregivers who provided loving care to Jean in her last years.
