Barbara,the Dodd family, and friends of John:   As the basketball coach and athletic director at the Landon School, I had numerous opportunities to meet and talk with John both on and off the court.  Was he a competitor?  Absolutely. Within that spirit of competition, however, lay the foundation of an educator-- a man who really cared for those whom he taught in the classroom and coached in basketball, tennis, and track. With a wealth of educational skills, a passion for fair play and sportsmanship, and a strong sense of caring, John was, indeed, " A man for all seasons".

The Landon community and I are thankful for having the opportunity to know John and learn from his good example.

I was blessed to be in the initial group of young men John Dodd taught and coached at St. Albans.  I think of the many basketball games, track and field events and math classes and I realize those combined experiences will never measure up to the lessons on character I received from John Dodd.  A part of any success I attained to date is directly attributable to John Dodd.  This news is heartbreaking.

Mr. Dodd was the best math teacher I had at St. Albans.  He was a brilliant teacher, encouraging, and a great person.  I was very lucky that he was at St. Albans during my time there.  He will be missed by all.

I arrived at St. Albans in 1971 from Japan with one year of public school in Seattle in between.  Mr. Dodd was my first math teacher.  I remember distinctly his geometry class. He combined a sense of humor with warmth.  The coach in him kept us unruly boys in line. I will miss him.

Amen to Steve Wilson's fine tribute below!  

I was a year ahead of Steve, in the Class of 1974 at St. Albans.  In 1973-74 we also had a fine basketball team, losing only four games all season and finishing the year ranked among the top teams in the Washington area.  We managed to beat Georgetown Prep once, in the final game of the season, the championship game of The St. Stephens Tournament, with our best player, Bill Green, sinking two free throws to put us ahead by one point after time expired.  One of the parents of an opposing player was so impressed by our teamwork and ability to compete against much taller opponents that he anonymously gave us trophies to commemorate our great season!  That ability to compete effectively was instilled in us by Coach Dodd -- we practiced hard and were always better conditioned than our opponents.  We also had perfect schemes to take advantage of our quickness and to compensate for our lack of size.  Coach Dodd taught us how to win.  

John Dodd was also a fine math teacher.  Learning plane geometry in his classroom was a pleasure.   He found his calling in teaching and coaching, and his students and athletes are better for it.  

It's very sad that the life of such a fine man had to end so soon, but we should celebrate and give thanks for John Dodd's life nonetheless.

I was terribly saddened to learn of John Dodd's passing. I remember him fondly as the varsity basketball coach at St. Albans School in Washington D.C. I was a senior on the team in 1975 when he coached us to one of the best records in the city. We didn't have any tall players, but he molded us into a hustling, ball-hawking, pressing, fast-breaking, crowd-pleasing, close-knit team. Our only regret is that we couldn't beat dreaded Georgetown Prep that season (three close losses, including two in overtime). Coach Dodd was very intense and determined to win. He was always fair and a true gentleman. I know I speak for the whole team when I say we will miss him dearly. Thanks Coach Dodd for bringing out the best in all of us.

We send our thoughts and prayers to your family, especially to Ryan, who coached us and made tennis so much fun for us over the past few summers at New Albany Country Club.  Ryan, your enthusiasm and passion from tennis obviously comes from your father and is a tribute to his teaching.

I was a student of Mr. Dodd's in his first years of teaching at St. Albans.  He was a young, enthusiastic, and somewhat shy (then) teacher. I remember that he blushed once in class - bright red!  It was a difficult time and place to be a teacher, but he put his all into it - you could see his effort in every class.  He really cared. Of course, he was a great teacher!  I still think geometry is cool.  I am sure that there are many many who are thankful to have been taught by him - I am.

We just returned from Auburn University last night and learned of Mr. Dodd's passing catching up with papers this morning.   Sadly, future students have lost the hard to find treasure of a great math teacher.  Our daughter's success in calculus at Auburn is tribute to it.  He was able to reach her and others, teaching what for some is a difficult subject, in a kind and caring manner.  To Mr. Dodd's family, please accept our sincere sympathy and take comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in such a positive way.    The Linkinhoker family.

Mr. Dodd was a teacher who wanted all of his students to excel. Because of this he was unique in finding various ways to communicate the complexities of mathematics. Nothing was off limits for this inspiring teacher(including dancing). He also showed the same commitment to parenting, always teaching Erin and Ryan that true sportsmanship is a necessity on and off the court. The Goehring family would like to send their sincere condolences to the Dodd family.

To the entire Dodd family, I am sorry to hear of your loss.  Coach Dodd was the best high school tennis coach around.  I played for him for four years at Academy and I can't begin to tell you all the memories I still have from that time.  My favorite was pushing the school van a mile down the freeway after he ran out of gas coming back from Lancaster!  Nobody put as much time and energy into coaching tennis and he absolutely was the reason we enjoyed so much team success over the years.  What a great person and helper he was and will truly be missed.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all your family.

To the Dodd Family,  I was saddened to hear of your loss.  Growing up in Bellefontaine, Ohio, I was lucky to have known  John and his parents.  Not only was John an athletic hero of mine but he was also a great role model on how to live one's life.  John's impact on the youth of Bellefontaine can never be measured, but I do know the esteem I held  him in.  I was a college tennis coach for years and the last time I talked to John was a couple of years ago, talking about his son Ryan and his potential to play college tennis.  I remember hanging up and telling myself, "Wow, I just talked to John Dodd"
I will always regret not having the chance to hit a few with him one more time.

To the Dodd Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to have had Mr Dodd as one of my tennis coaches at the Columbus Academy. I will always remember Coach for his silent strength, his leadership by example, and his high ethical standards. Not to mention his crafty tennis game. I was recently back at The Columbus Academy getting inducted into the athletic hall of fame and was able to thank him during my acceptance speech. I am just sorry I wasn't able to say it to him in person. But please know that he had a lasting impact on me and that he will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him. Barb, Erin and Dodd family:
We're so sorry.  Mr. Dodd was a quiet, strong presence who cared about what he was doing and, more importantly, cared about the people for whom he was doing it.  He taught two of my daughters math at Columbus Academy and they loved him.  He was a friendly companion on the sidelines as we watched our daughters play field hockey and win a state championship back in '01.  I always loved seeing him, even if was only for a few minutes in the lobby of the local 5/3 Bank branch during the last few years.  Mr. Dodd was so special.  Our prayers for all of you!

Dear Erin and the entire Dodd family,
I am so sorry to hear of John's passing.  He was such a kind man and always so quick to offer a friendly smile or hello.  I remember when I first started going to Academy in 7th grade and didn't really know anyone, I was able to connect with Mr. Dodd over our shared love of the game of tennis.  I used to see him at my older sister's matches when CSG played CA and so looked forward to having him as a coach one day.  Unfortunately I never got to have Mr. Dodd as a coach on my team, and remember being SO envious of the boys team that THEY got to keep Mr. Dodd as their coach :) Erin, I know it's been awhile since we've spoken, but I just want to let you know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. If there's anything your CA class of '02 can do for you, we're always here for you.
