It is September 2, 2020 as I write this memory. My name is Mark Huebner. As I write this I am 68. My mother was Johanna Egli. She was born in Oberrieden, Switzerland in 1911 and emigrated to America in 1947 to San Jose California where her brother Albert Egli lived. She was a cousin of Jack's and we visited him in 1980. At the time I was living in Denver and came down on a bus. It was one of those weird days in Colorado with a big spring snow storm east of the Rockies, but when we crossed the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the San Luis Valley there was no more snow on the ground. My mother and sister came by another bus and I think we all disembarked in Durango and Jack came from Allison to pick us up and take us back to his home. We stayed for a few days and he showed us around the area.  My mother brought her traditional Swiss costume and put it on. Somewhere I have a picture of this. Jack showed us his pigs and the dairy milk collection site nearby. It was a great visit as I remember. Jack's part of the family (my mothers uncle Alfred) was mostly in the Hudson River Valley as I remember and was a family of artists including Alfred and Hulda.  Another relative was Edwin Egli who resided with his wife in Albuquerque. After the trip I went back to Denver and then to Canada for graduate school. My mother and sister went back to San Jose. I lose track of things but I think my mother went back at least once to visit Jack and maybe stayed for a week because she thought he needed a woman's hand around the house. This was also a year after the death of her husband at 80.

I roomed with Jack at Williams AF base and lived across from him in Tempe,AR. We also worked in the same office at Williams. I thought I knew most there was to know about Jack’s public life but his interest in agriculture was a big surprise.

 We, here in the Allison area who always cared about our rather eccentric friend Jack will and have had fun sharing zany stories for many years to come, keeping the memory alive.

  We are very grateful for the care that was provided for Jack, and I, too, wish to especially thank Felix for the gentle, kind way in which he coddled Jack through the roughest part of his journey. I wish him the best in his life's travels.

  Jack and I forged a friendship starting somewhere back in the eighties and in 1990 I moved to the Allison area, bought land and was determined to build my own home. Jack never hesitated to help me by at first, when he still could, running his backhoe and then loaning me same when he couldn't. Not everyone would just loan a lady a backhoe, but Jack felt I had 'moxie' and we both by then had built a friendship based on respect. Something that anyone who knew Jack knows was not all that straight forward for him.

We built on it.

 As the years ran past us the hard facts of living with MS started to add up and so it was that I'd get calls quite frequently; "Carolynn, I've stuck my scooter in a red ant hill (fortunately, he couldn't feel a thing), Carolynn, I've spilled boiling hot oil on my foot", and again I was grateful he could not feel the pain but I'd cuss that insidious disease at the same time. Many of his friends answered those calls willingly. He bore it like a champ and he was unfailingly kind to me through-out our long friendship. I am glad that it led to becoming friends with his family and I care about you all. 

So, it's fair thee well, sweet prince, in my book. And thanks for the secret map to the asparagus, Jack, I don't pick a piece without a thought of you. Our last words to each other were "I love you"; it doesn't get any better than that.
