

John R. Gerhardt of Columbus, passed on to Glory on November 28, 2023 at the age of 79. John was born March 3, 1944 in Effingham, Illinois, to the late Herbert and Florence (Shadwell) Gerhardt. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who will be sorely missed by his wife of 18 years, June Gerhardt; his children, Rickey Cannon, Penny Barland, and Jenny Sharp; stepchildren, Robert (Lora) Posey, Cheryl Blevins, Donna (Troy) Thoman, and Deborah Posey; 20 beloved grandchildren; John C. (Kallean) Gerhardt, Katelynne Gerhardt, Timmy (Ambi) Barland, Tonya Sharp, Sonya Kahveci, Nicole (Shaun) Vonville, Michelle Cannon, Amanda Boesch, Kelly Weisheimer, Taylor (Kyle) Hyer, Melody Payne, Melinda (Brandon) Holley, Cody Thoman, Chelsea (Alex) Broersma, Caleb Thoman (Sarah Elliott), Kervens Thoman, Withji Thoman, Austin Posey and Ayden Posey, and 26 adored great-grandchildren.
John is also survived by brothers, Wally and Kenny Gerhardt; several nieces, nephews, and friends, including special friends, Bob and Mary Posey. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Marleta Gerhardt; sons, Robert Cannon and Larry Gerhardt; and son-in-law, Dwight Blevins. John was a retired truck driver with U.S. Holland Truck Lines, where he enjoyed traveling the roads of America for over 35 years. He was a longtime member of Teamsters Local 413 and a past Steward of the union.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church, 1185 Noe-Bixby Rd, Columbus, on Tuesday, December 5, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with the service at 11:30 a.m. There will be a luncheon (one of John's favorite things) immediately following the service at the church. There will be a graveside service at Kingwood Memorial Park, 8230 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center, OH. 43035 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund c/o First Baptist Church, in John’s memory.
