Our precious dear friend, uncle, brother, and brother- in- law said his final goodbye to us on Thursday, December 28, 2017. Words cannot describe what a gentle, humble, kind, fun, generous, funny, feisty and highly intelligent man he was. John (Uncle Al) travelled the world extensively and always had many stories and experiences to share. All eyes would be glued to him as he so eloquently and interestingly portrayed each and every unique experience he had. If you were lucky enough to know (or even meet him), you certainly would never, ever forget him.
Born in 1922, John graduated from St. Charles Academy, and then went on to New York as part of the Fordham University Theatre Arts program. During that time, he appeared in Shakespearean and classical productions, and a number of plays on Broadway (his favorite was Angel Street, which later became the movie Gaslight). This phase of his life ended with World War II when he joined the Army Air Corps as a B-29 pilot.
After the war he returned to College, and since his interests were ever-changing, he studied at many colleges including Laval in Quebec, Fordham, Kansas Wesleyan, and the Rochester Institute of Technology to name a few. He eventually graduated from the Ohio State University in 1950. In that same year, he met and married Dodi, a happy marriage that lasted 59 years. John's interest in communication and advertising landed him a job at the Warner P Simpson Company where he eventually became part owner. He retired from there in 1980, but a few months later, a former client persuaded him to become Vice President for marketing of the Park Corporation in Philadelphia. Of course, this allowed him to explore the world even further. Meanwhile, he and Dodi traveled abroad making many trips to New York as their passions for the arts, the theatre and the opera could not keep them still.
John leaves behind his sister, Ivy J Macioce, Sister in law Doris Hoermle, many nieces and nephews, good friends Tracy, Cindy, Spencer, Geni, Pat, Maggie, Tim, Ed, Rosie and Ray, and GOOD GRIEF (as Al would say) sooo many others to mention.
A short graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 10am at St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. In memory of his death, contributions can be made to the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 E Broad Street Columbus Oh 43215, the Metropolitan Opera, office of planned giving, 30 Lincoln Center, New York, NY 10023, or the charity of your choice as John gave so graciously and generously to more than 75 different charities and causes. He will be greatly and forever missed.
