John was born on November 14, 1931 to Robert and Gladys Palmer. In John's youth, he enjoyed hunting and spending summers on his Grandfather's farm. Upon graduating from high school he joined the Navy and served as a Submariner on the USS Guavina #362. Throughout his life, John was grateful and proud of that service and of his career as a Tool and Die Maker at Timken Roller Bearing Company and later at General Motors.
In 1983, John met and married the true love of his life, Gerri. They enjoyed life together, raised Gerri's children, served in many capacities in the Order of the Eastern Star, vacationed in Florida, and took ocean cruises.
John pursued many hobbies: fishing, skydiving, painting, reading and learning to play the Bagpipes. For many years he enjoyed participating in the Bagpipe Unit of the Aladdin Shrine. Other interests included: active membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, SAMS and membership in the Columbus Base Veteran Submariners where he was honored to be inducted into the Holland Club. In 2015 John was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Ohio as a 60 plus member as a Master Mason (Neoacacia Lodge #595). In 2017, friends from Eastern Star presented him with a 25 year membership pin. After he retired, he served as a Courier and later as a Greeter/Ambassador for Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Service. Of importance to John was his attendance and membership in the Redeemer United Methodist Church.
John was preceded in death by his parents Gladys and Robert Palmer and daughter Kimberly Palmer. John is survived by his wife, Gerri; his daughters Candace (Mark) Steele and Pamela (Mark) Schwab and their daughter Marlaina; step-children Kevin (Beth) Nasal and Noelle (Shawn) Adams and their daughters Avery and Emerson.
The family acknowledges with grateful thanks: Dr. Douglas Scharre and the staff of Forest Hills Center, especially Eric Brown, Bella Care Hospice and Pastor Richard Birk of Redeemer United Methodist Church.
Family will receive friends from 2-3pm Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, OH 43230 where a memorial service will follow at 3pm. The family requests NO FLOWERS please.
