

Joe was born on February 2, 1942 to Joanna and Michael Butera in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was a proud graduate of Slippery Rock University where he majored in education. He obtained his master's degree and principal certification from The University of Pittsburgh.
His entire professional life was dedicated to education. He spent over 30 years at Mt Lebanon High School where he served as teacher, administrator and relentless supporter of nearly every school activity and competition.
"Mr. Butera" was beloved for his passion, wit and commitment to the school and its students. His teaching efforts focused primarily on history and current events where his fevor for history, politics, environmental issues and world affairs were given free rein. He inaugurated and was an active supporter of competitive academic games taking Mt. Lebanon's highly competitive teams to regional and national competitions.
He sought to inspire and encourage his students to be responsible citizens committed to achieving both their academic and personal goals. His acts of kindness were numerous. He spontaneously offered support or assistance whenever he observed an opportunity to help.
He was an avid tennis player and downhill skier. Near the end of his career he indulged his love of Opera as a volunteer and occasional on-stage extra with the Pittsburgh Opera.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Rosalie (McDermott) and her husband Charles (Chuck). As he requested, he will be interred with the ashes of his cherished Dalmatian dog Tyler.
The family would like to extend their unending gratitude to the staff at Our Family Home who provided exceptional care, love and support to Joe and his family for the past 7 years.
Joe will be missed by his family Marianne (McDermott) Gradisar of Columbus, Ohio, Tami (McDermott) Folk and Peter McDermott of Akron, Ohio and his numerous great nieces and nephews. His special friend, Dr. Judy Hulick and his many students and friends will also mourn his passing. To acknowledge his dedication to education, a Scholarship Fund will be established in his name. Contributions to the Joe Butera scholarship fund can be sent to the Mt Lebanon School District, 7 Horsman Drive, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15228.
