Mr. Herman was born in Findlay, Ohio, sometime between the end of the "Great Depression" and the beginning of World War II. He attended twelve years in public schooling in Mansfield, Ohio, graduating in 1956. Earl Bruce, in his first year of coaching, taught Mr. Herman how to swim at Mansfield Senior High School. Coach Bruce was, also, on Mr. Herman's News-Journal paper route.
Mr. Herman entered the United States Navy upon graduation (He thought his parents were sending him to a boy's camp along the shores of Lake Michigan!). After sailing the Pacific Ocean and touring the Far East with the Military Sea Transport Service, the sailor returned from the sea (Three Years, Two Months, and Twenty-one days of Active Duty!).
Mr. Herman then attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, from January 1960 until June 1964. (Mr. Herman described his college experiences as "Two and a half years of trying to stay in, and two and a half years trying to get out!).
Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Comprehensive Business Education from KSU in June of '64, Mr. Herman was hired by the Columbus Public Schools to begin his teaching career at West High School.
After ten years of successful teaching "on the Hilltop", Mr. Herman attempted a change of careers, but selling "socks and jocks" at Lazarus was not to his liking. (Remember the recession of '74).
Joe returned to teaching with the Columbus System in the Spring of 1975. After subbing in twenty-six secondary schools in 160 days, Mr. Herman was assigned to the Business and Office Education Department of Linden McKinley High School in the Spring of 1976.
Mr. Herman returned to his Alma Mater, KSU, in the summers of 1976 and 1978 to complete requirements for certification in Intensive Office Education (IOE and Cooperative Office Education (COE). Additional courses taken in Graduate School at The Ohio State University enabled Mr. Herman to upgrade his Ohio teaching certification. A word processing course taken at Summer Tech at the Fort Hayes Career Center was useful in expanding his teaching tool bag.
Mr. Herman was a member of he Ohio Education Association, The National Education Association, The Columbus Education Association, The Ohio Business Teachers Association, The National Business Education Association, The West High Alumni Association, The Columbus Association for Performing Arts, The National Geographic Society, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Kent State University Alumni Association, The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and Sam's Club.
Mr. Herman traveled extensively during his vacation and summer breaks away from teaching. Gardening was one of his favorite hobbies. He was also well-know as an avid "party-giver".
Mr. Herman is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Herman, and brother George Herman of Lafayette, LA. He is survived by a nephew and niece and many loyal friends and neighbors.
Family will receive friend from 1-3 PM on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221.
