

Joseph Wayne Rose, age 92, Born 08/13/1924; Died 09/25/2016. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, "The Secretary of War", Dorothy Ann (Helmbrecht), his son Michael Allen Rose, father John Joseph (Pete) Rose, mother Susan Miller, father- and
mother-in-law Carl "Gus" and Ruby Helmbrecht, sister Eileen Sonner, twin brothers Daniel L. and James L Rose, brothers-in-law Russell Adams, Carl Helmbrecht, John Helmbrecht, and William Suver; sisters-in-law Everetta Adams, Mary Helmbrecht, Evelyn Helmbrecht, Edna Mae Suver and Rosemary Suver.
Survived by sons John Joseph (Margaret) Rose and Kenneth Wayne (Lisa) Rose; grand children Anne Marie Neer and Joseph Michael Rose; great-grand daughters Stephanie Rose Neer and Abbie Nicole Neer; brother Ira Edward (Joan) Rose, sister-in-law Pauline Rose as well as the extended Rose, Helmbrecht and Suver families.
Joe was a proud WWII Navy veteran. Joe enlisted in 1941, prior to Pearl Harbor, but was sent home to gain weight and grow another inch. His active duty began in early 1942 and he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, including time aboard the USS Alaska. Through most of the war, Joe was in charge of deck guns on board ammunition resupply ships, making runs through the German U-boat lines into Russia as well as into the Mediterranean Sea to North Africa and Italy. After the war, Joe was a member of the Seabee Reserve Company 4-19 in Columbus until 1953. Joe was a life member of VFW Post 89 and the NAUS Club. Joe was elated to have been taken on one of the Honor Flight trips
to Washington D.C. in 2009.
Joe was born in Columbus and lived on the Westside of Columbus most of his life. He grew up in the "Bottoms" and attended Holy Family. After his first son was born, he moved his new family to the Hilltop. After his second son was born, he moved the family farther west to a new home in the Westgate area in 1957. It was in this home that he passed surrounded by his sons and his daughters-in-law.
Joe was a carpenter by trade and worked construction most of his life. Joe built many homes and apartment buildings in Columbus as well being the foreman in charge of constructing one of the first sections of I71 through Columbus - from Greenlawn Ave to Grove City. Joe retired from the Ontario store on Alum Creek Drive where he helped many a contractor and DIY'er with their project's hardware and electrical needs. Joe was a founding member of St. Agnes Parrish and was heavily involved in the Athletic Association programs and Boy Scout Troop 250 for many years. Joe was a long time member of St. Mary Magdalene Parrish.
The family wishes to express their great appreciation to the staff of First Community Village, especially Colleen, Robert, Laurie and Tina, for their assistance in taking good care of Joe in his last few months. And, the National Church Residence Hospice group, especially Toni, Fred and Mel, for their attention
in his final days. The family also wishes to thank Diana Cullen for her assistance in caring for Joe during his final days at home.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Franklin County Humane Society in Joe's name, or to your favorite charity.
The family will receive friends Friday September 30, 2016 from 3-6 PM at HOPE and HEART FUNERAL HOME by SCHOEDINGER, 3030 W Broad St, Columbus, OH 43204. At 6PM a memorial service will be conducted followed by Military Honors.
Interment at Grove City Cemetery will be private and held at a later date.
