He was one of the BEST teachers I had at West High School.  I am so sorry for your loss!  He was a terrific man!  Hold on to great memories!

I got to know Kent the last ten years as a member at the OSU Golf Club. We became friends with our conversations every time I came in the Pro shop. We shared mutual interests as UA graduates (myself 1963), Kiawah Island vacations and love of OSU sports. As a retired physician I became familiar with his health issues and resulting suffering. So sorry and shocked to hear of his passing but he is resting comfortably now. So glad he got to have the reunion with his old HS basketball players. What a wonderful man always with a smile and kind word for everyone - he will be missed by family and friends. A special thought to his son, Brendan

As you all grieve, I pray for GOD's strength for the family. My name is Chuck Jones, Coach called me Charlie, and the loss of Coach has saddened me but also inspired me to continue his legacy. I am now a basketball coach and of course Coach influenced that, and I'm proud to say that 85% of what I facilitate  for my teams, COMES FROM COACH BURG! As I was in middle school, my cousin, Mike Glasco, always talked about Coach Burg. I looked forward to playing for him at West and the day I met him was monumental! I remember the day he taught us the "sideline fast break" I thought it was the greatest scoring strategy. Now to this day, it has become a fabric of all my teams. The best about Coach was his ability to TEACH and that's what I continue to do as a coach. One of my teams had practice scheduled the day I learned of Coach's passing, and I explained to them about Coach followed by a moment of silence before we began. I owe my coaching skills to Coach Kent Burgert but I know he was so much more to many others & family than a coach. I thank the family for sharing a great man with a great heart. My heart is saddened by the pain and suffering the Burgert family has dealt with these past couple of years. Kent was a wonderful man, husband, father and son to a beautiful mother who has had heartbreak that is more than any mother should have to bear. My prayers go out to the family and special prayers for Lorraine Burgert. I pray for strength for Joan and Lisa Burgert as they are faced to lead and care for the family as they grieve. My love for Kent's younger brother Barry (who left us 2 years ago) is my connection to this family since 1972..... And I am blessed to have known them all.

Dear Burgert Family, 
Mr. Burgert was my gym teacher at West, and absolutely one of my favorites. He was always good-natured and fun. He used to call me "Big Red" because of my hair, and of course, that made me feel special to be given extra attention. The last time I saw him, he was coaching a high school basketball tournament at Otterbein, where I was a student. It made me feel good that he got to see one of his "kids" from WHS in college. 

Just knowing how much the WHS community will miss him, I can only imagine how much you will. God bless all of you, and thank you so much for sharing him with us.

Mr. Burgert was an amazing teacher. He was my gym teacher at West High in 84 for two years. He allowed me to be a teachers helper during my study hall period because he knew I would get bored. So coming to extra gym classes probably kept me out of trouble.

Prayers for all of your family.

I kept basketball stats for his JV basketball team at West.  He was always so very kind.  My deepest sympathy to his family.  My God give you all strength during this difficult time.

One of my best buddies throughout my youth. Basketball, softball, miniture golf and countless hours trying to figure out girls. A truly earnest man. No agenda. He was a decent man. He embodied the kind of person our parents raised us to be. Strong, commited, honest, fair and genuine. I lost one of my gang.

Kent and I first met at Gary Brad's basketball camp at Tremont Elementary.  It was the summer before we started at Jone's Junior High.  Not only did Kent like and excel
 at sports, he was a sensitive person who cared about people.  We played basketball together in both junior high and high school and had just as much fun enjoying a Tommy's pizza and talking about life at that age.  We had many fun games of Putt-Putt together then Kent "graduated" to the OSU Pro Shop where he worked for over 40 years.  Kent loved everything about working at the golf course including the restaurant where he met his first love and wife, Joan, and also scoring a hole-in-one on Scarlet's number 13.  Kent will be deeply missed by many including wife Joan, and children Brendan and Keeley.  Not only was Kent the best man in my wedding, he was one of the best men I ever met.  He was constantly giving guidance to young men at crucial times in their lives. Above all, Kent had a love and dedication to his family.  My wife and I will miss Kent and encourage Joan, Brendan and Keeley to remember the good times.  He is with the Lord and he is without pain and there is no better place to be.

Kent Burgert was my basketball coach when I was in high school at Columbus West.  He was the one that took me to the side and taught me the proper way to shoot a basketball.  He paitiently worked with me the whole season my sophomore year, not just on shooting but my game in general.  He was always someone I could come to when I had an issue.  He was an awesome coach & teacher and I wish his friends & family solace in their time of mourning!  RIP coach Burgert!!!

Kent was a fellow colleague while teaching at West High and we enjoyed swapping stories and chatting on a wide range of topics which included everything from what he looked for when he was scouting basketball to memories of vacations at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He and I had a particular fondness for the Nicoboli, a local creation from Nicola's Pizza in Rehoboth; somewhat of a stromboli or calzone with sauce, ground beef, pepperoni and cheese etc.  I don't think were were ever in Rehoboth at the same time so occasionally we would bring a Nicoboli  back home to Columbus to share an edible memory. Kent was easy going but directed, friendly and projected a good attitude toward life. He was solid and always positive. I saw him from time to time and the laughter and memories  always brightened the day.  Whenever we pick up a memory of a friend from the past and smile immediately, it is something we don't have to resolve to keep. It is permanent and it is good. I know that Kent touched many lives and helped them make the choices and choose the direction that made a difference for good.  Kent's reach was beyond what we will ever fully realize. Mrs Burgert ( senior) my Heart  breaks for you having to lose your two sons! I remember Kent helping out and supporting the UA basketball team that Barry and my brother Bucky were on. Those were wonderful times! I am deeply sorry for your loss. My prayers for you and Kent's wife and children. We have lost a good man.

First I want to say I'm very sorry Joan, Keeley and Brendan for your loss. I had the privilege to work with Burg (that's all I called him) for 11 years at Beechcroft. Several of those years we were together in the gym.  During that time we became very close. I always enjoyed getting a history lesson on City League basketball or an update on Keeley or Brendan. During our many conversations you always knew that Burg had great passion for his family, basketball, golf and a good meal particularly meat and potatoes. He also had a great passion for his friends. He would always have great pieces of advice for me. He has always said that his marriage with Joan was the greatest thing ever, along with raising children. Burg was also very strong in his faith. I will miss the emails I would get from him about God and keeping the faith. Burg thank you for that. Thank you for sending the Osu football jerseys to my sons and the cheer outfit for my daughter. Thank you for teaching and coaching so many young men the game of basketball and life. Thank you for mentoring and befriending so many young teachers at Beechcroft. Thank you for getting up and playing another 18 holes of golf after you already played with your regular foursome. Thank you for being great to my wife and family. Thanks for being a great friend and mentor for the past 21 years. Thank you for coming into my life and making it better. Happy Fathers Day Burg! God bless and RIP.

While interacting with Kent at the Pro  Shop during the winter, I enjoyed discussing basketball and religion.  Kent was equally adept at discussing each.

I am so sorry for your great loss - Kent was a gentleman, respectful to all. He had so much courage and fought like crazy to deal with his health issues. I have been a member of OSU Golf Courses for over 40 years and have so appreciated his kindnesses, patience, and willingness to listen. He loved his family, basketball and OSU. He will truly be missed by so many. Keep the happy memories in your hearts. I am sorry that I will miss his services as I will be out of town on business that could not be changed. But Kent and all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Stay strong, you know that is what Kent would want. Rest with no pain, Kent.
