

Larry was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 9, 1948. In 1966, he graduated from Lakewood High School, Hebron, Ohio. Larry completed his undergraduate education at The Ohio State University and received a Juris Doctor from Capital University. He retired from the State of Ohio's Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Larry was an avid sailor and felt most at home on Lake Erie. He was a loyal Buckeye fan and history buff. Larry was active in Gyro International as a member of the Powell Gyro Club and served as former District Governor. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with the "APA Old F*rts".
Larry is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Rita Mathews; daughters Cherie Voit and Sarah Mathews; granddaughters Emily and Heidi Voit; sister and brother-in-law Jane and Gary Bowen; sister-in-law Michele Schultz; niece Tanya Mantel; nephew Mathew Bowen; three great nephews C.J. Vanderzee, Maxwell Mantell, and Bradley Bowen; honorary granddaughter Rebecca Voit; and honorary great granddaughter Natalie Rose Voit. He is preceded in death by father Stanley; mother Gladys; brother Kenny; and mother-in-law Anita Mossholder. He will be missed by former colleagues, countless friends, and faithful dog Cole.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 12:00 - 3:00 pm at the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9, 6800 Schrock Hill Court, Columbus, Ohio. We will hold a toast in honor of Larry D. "Grampy" Mathews at 2:00 p.m.
