

Larry was born February 16, 1930 in Lancaster to the late William Forrest and Edna Lee (Borchers) Smith. In 1948, after graduating from North High School, Larry worked for J.W. Watson Ford dealership and continued through its many incarnations until 1976 when he joined State Farm Insurance and remained 23 years until retirement, primarily as an automotive insurance estimator trainer throughout the state for new hires. He served in the Ohio Army National Guard from 1950-53 and was called to active duty, spending one year in the Korean Conflict. From 1973 until 2013, Larry was a candy maker, having inherited the Pitts candy making business. He was an Abiding Savior Lutheran Church Boy Scout Leader and he was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. Other membership’s included lifetime NRA, Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association and Single Action Shooting Society. He was a target shooter, but especially loved cowboy shooting.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Pitts) Smith and children Rick (Barbara Donohue) Smith, Larry Daniel (Yvonne) Smith and Cindy Byrer; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Donald Smith and son-in-law William Byrer.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at SCHOEDINGER NORHTEAST, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna from 12-1:30PM. A funeral will be held at 1:30PM with Pastor Steve Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Amanda Twp. Cemetery, 3019 Amanda Northern Rd SW, at 3:30PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
