

Lawrence Kent Waters, Ph.D passed away peacefully on October 14, 2018. He was a very kind, gentle, thoughtful, generous man who loved dogs, chocolate chip cookies, and especially his wife, Dr. Carrie Jean Wherry Waters, who preceded him in death in 2014. Larry was born on October 19, 1930 in Flint Michigan, and was the only child of Lawrence W. and Bernice Philippi Waters. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Olivet Nazarene University, his Masters from Illinois Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D in Human Engineering Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1958. It was at OSU that Larry met Carrie and they were married on December 26, 1958. For three years, Larry served as a Lieutenant in the Navy as an Aerospace Experimental Psychologist at the Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola Florida. In 1961 Larry and Carrie moved to Washington, D.C., where both were employed by the U.S. Army Personnel Research Office. In 1964 they moved to Athens, Ohio to work for Ohio University. For 31 years, Larry was a Professor in the OU Psychology Department teaching industrial psychology and statistics. He also did private research in various industrial settings, including Nationwide Insurance in Columbus. Larry and Carrie enjoyed vacationing nearly every year at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They loved this area and especially enjoyed when other family joined them. In addition to his wife, Larry was predeceased by his brother-in-law John R. Wherry, sister-in-law Dr. Gloria Wherry Dougherty Kinnaird, and sister-in-law Barbara Jones Wherry. Surviving him are John's wife, Patricia Wherry, and Barbara's husband, Dr. Robert J. Wherry, Jr., and nieces and nephews: Douglas B. Dougherty (Mary), Robert B. Dougherty (Toni), Robert J. Wherry III (Helena), Steven P. Wherry (Gina), Mary-Beth Wherry Peddell (Michael), Barbara L. Wherry-Skog (Mark), John R. Wherry Jr. (JoAnne), David Wherry (Jennifer), Donald Wherry (Karen), and Mark Wherry, cousins Matt Blair (Annie), Charles Blair ( Mary) and over 20 grand nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Our Family Home and Capital City Hospice for the excellent care given to Larry over the last four years and last year respectively. Visitation will be on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 1735 Bethel Road, Columbus OH 43220 from 11 AM to noon, with a memorial service at noon. The family will receive guests at a luncheon at the church following the service. Interment will follow at Glen Rest Memorial Cemetery.
