Leroy S. Barnes

Leroy S. Barnes, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013 under the care of Kobacker House. The son of John W. Barnes and Rosannah Medley Barnes, he was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on September 6th, 1922. He was the third of six children: John W. (Jack), Robert (Bob), Paul, Ruth Bibler, and Kenneth M. (Ken). He enlisted in the Navy at age 18 and served as radio operator on PT boats and set up radio installations in places like New Guinea in the South Pacific and England, including participation and support in the D-Day assault. After World War II, he married Betty Lou Hedges on November 29th, 1946. He is survived by his children, Susan Barnes De Resendiz, born on July 6th, 1947, and his son, Steven Lee Barnes, born on July 1, 1950. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Public Accounting in 1949 at Ohio University and briefly worked at a bank before he joined Paul J. Knospe Public Accounting. He settled in Clintonville, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, with his family and became a partner at the firm, which then became Knospe and Barnes Public Accountants. His son, Steven, also a CPA, joined Leroy in his practice in 1971 which then became Barnes, Barnes and Associates. He was past president and member of the board of the Public Accountants Society of Ohio, treasurer of Maynard Avenue Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, an active trap shooter, and a founding member of the Blackwing Shooting Center in Delaware, Ohio. He was a active photographer and designed a camera strap that was sold nationally. He took his family camping around Ohio most weekends. He worked until he was 75 years old. He and Betty spent winters at Silver Dollar Ranch in Tarpon Springs, Florida. He is survived by his children, Susan (husband Victor Resendiz) and Steve (fiancee Kim Howell), and three grandchildren: Tracy Travis (husband Jeff Travis), Elizabeth Collins (partner Nicola Thompson), and Meredith Collins (husband Perry Gagliardi), and great-grandchildren Kaylee and Jacob Travis and Edward Collins-Thompson. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be directed to Indian Lake Community Church, 120 Orchard Island Road, P.O. Box 457, Russell’s Point, Ohio 43348. A private memorial service will be held later. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Schoedinger Worthington Chapel.
