Louise Shively, 64, passed away February 13, 2010 after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She spent her last days at her home in Worthington, Ohio in the company of close friends and family. Born May 31, 1945 in Winona, Minnesota, Louise grew up in Cincinnati, where she attended elementary school at Our Lady of Lourdes and graduated from Mother Mercy Academy. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, having majored in French, and also earned a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University. She and her husband Eric met in graduate school, married in 1976, and celebrated 33 years of marriage. Louise was preceded in death by her father, Philip Hock; her mother, Harriet Heaser Hock; brother, Philip Hock, Jr., and nephew David Hock. She is survived by her husband, Eric, her son, Matthew, daughter Diane, brother Bill Hock, and many nieces and nephews. She considered her sisters-in-law, Angela Hock and Prudence Hock, to be her true sisters. Louise stayed home to raise her two children but after their school years went to work at Old Worthington Library where she became the Administrative Assistant. She retired at the end of 2008 after working for the library ten years. Her retirement came shortly after she discovered the breast cancer originally diagnosed in 1998 had returned.
Louise was a deeply spiritual person and was for many years active in the Worthington Presbyterian Church. More recently, Louise returned to her Catholic roots and was a member of Saint Michael Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and on the Respect Life Committee. Louise also served in the Shawl Ministry at Worthington Presbyterian church, and happily participated in a women’s reading group and the “sock club,” having become an avid knitter. Louise read a wide range of literature and was especially fond of detective fiction such as the books of Tony Hillerman and Ralph McInerny. She was an intense fan of Buckeye football and the “Lady Bucks” basketball. Even to the very end of her life, Louise was known for her vivacity, cheerful outlook and radiant smile. She was buoyed by a deep faith and a capacity for love that embraced and enriched everyone she knew. Family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 PM at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St. (1/2 mile south of I-270). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church, 5750 N. High St., Worthington.
