Marilyn J. Simmons, age 81, of Upper Arlington, Ohio passed away on November 28, 2015. She was born on December 16, 1933 in Weston, Ohio, the daughter of Floyd D. and Opal P. Strow. Growing up on a farm, Marilyn learned the importance of hard work and the value of family, which was always evident in how she lived her life and loved those around her. As a 1954 graduate of The Ohio State University, Marilyn began her 35-year teaching career at the age of 20 at Tremont Elementary School in Upper Arlington. She brought her passion for teaching, curious intellect, and love of learning into the classroom each year. She received Upper Arlington's Golden Apple Award for teaching.
The characteristics that made her a great teacher also made her a great mom. Marilyn was loving, devoted, and selfless, and had a terrific sense of humor. Marilyn found great joy in gardening, reading, and cheering on her beloved Buckeyes.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her former husband, Stephen Simmons; and brother, Howard L. Strow. She is survived by her daughters, Amy (Dennis) Healy of Cincinnati, Megan (Denny Connor) Simmons and Melanie (Doyle) Unger, both of Columbus; granddaughter, Audrey Healy; step-grandchildren, Scott Connor and Caroline (Matt) Borland; brother, Gary D. (Kathy) Strow; sister-in-law, Doris Strow; and many nieces and nephews. The Simmons family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Riverside Methodist Hospital and Kobacker House who did an outstanding job caring for Marilyn. We appreciate all of your hard work and care. Visitation will be held 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1235 Northwest Blvd. in Grandview, Ohio. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 3 pm, also at Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Immediately following the memorial service on Thursday, friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life gathering at Amelita Mirolo Barn, 4395 Carriage Hill Lane in Upper Arlington, to toast and honor Marilyn. The family will have a private graveside service at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Upper Arlington Education Foundation (Tremont Endowment Fund) at www.upperarlingtoneducationfoundation.com, or Ohio Health Foundation for Hospice, P.O. Box 600001 Columbus, OH 43272-9802.
