Martha R. Meyer, after 95 years of good health and happiness, died on Sunday, May 17 at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her sister Mary and twin sister Margaret "Maggie" Meyer both of whom she cared for in their final years; also brothers Charles (Orma) Meyer and John Meyer. Martha is survived by her sister-in-law Nancy Meyer; nephew Mike (Sharon) Meyer, nieces Sue (Gerry) Paglione, Cathie (Allyn Brehl) Rheinfrank, Regina Meyer and Lisa Meyer; and many great nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to her as "Aunt Marchair". Martha was a devoted Catholic and was an active member of the old St. Peter church until its closing. There she sang in the choir and served as a loyal volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. While there she was also part of a group whose mission was to help re-settle impoverished immigrant families. Martha's kind nature enabled her to cultivate strong bonds with those she helped, including one that led to a lifelong friendship with Genia Geelhoed, who came to the U.S. with her family from Indonesia. Later Martha belonged to Sacred Heart and then St. Anthony Church where she led the senior group for a number of years. She also regularly visited the convent at Stella Niagra and counted many Sisters as friends, including her dear friend Sr. Barbara Holtzinger, OSF. Martha was a smart lady, graduating from Sacred Heart Commercial School in 1936, specializing in business competencies. She retired as a bookkeeper with Industrial Ceramics Products (formerly of Grandview), where she worked for nearly 50 years. Martha was a great cook and hosted many dinners for her family, traditionally on Christmas Eve. She also enjoyed birds and wildlife -- her squirrel friends often venturing right up to her sliding glass door for peanuts. But she really loved dogs, and was the "mom" to anywhere from one to four at any given time. She loved having canine visitors where she last called home, Willowbrook Christian Home in Worthington. A resident for more than 3 years, Martha was a favorite among staff and other residents and actively participated in resident outings, especially those involving tasty food. Martha's gentle demeanor touched all those she encountered and she was a loving, generous friend to many. She will be missed by all who knew her. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1300 Urban Dr., Columbus. Family friend, Fr. Kevin Lutz, Celebrant. Family will receive friends 4-7:30 p.m., with a 7:15 p.m. prayer service, Wednesday at SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Rd. Interment, St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made, if desired, to St. Anthony's St. Vincent de Paul Society.
