Marvin Eugene Baker

Marvin E. Baker, age 87, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at River Wood Estates in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He was born on October 19, 1930 in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Leonard and Lois (Stephens) Baker. He graduated from North High School in 1948 and served in the United States Air Force Headquarters Group during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He married Joyce Morgan in 1952. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for Hoosier Engineering and later for Battelle Memorial Institute as a lab technician in metallurgy while attending Ohio State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education in 1956. He served as a wood, metal, and drafting teacher at Jones Junior High School in Upper Arlington, Ohio prior to completion of his Master of Education degree in Industrial Education and Counseling from OSU in 1961. He then continued there as a guidance counselor and assistant principal for a total of 12 years. He also completed post Master's work in Administration, Guidance, Vocational Education, and Industrial Technology. During a one year sabbatical, he served as a Teaching Associate for four quarters in the Industrial Arts Department at OSU. While still at Jones, he worked summers as a part-time architectural draftsman and as a paint and remodel contractor. Over the years, he has built several family heirlooms. Marv's heart has always been with the struggling student and how he could improve learning. In 1968, he became the Executive Director and Principal at Six Pence School, a private school for learning-disabled youth and young adults, in Columbus, Ohio. He was there for 16 years. He then worked an additional 11 years for Columbia Gas of Ohio, holding various clerical, service, mechanical, and operational positions, retiring in 1996. He was an active member of Sertoma International, University Club, serving as secretary for two years. He was awarded membership in Phi Delta Kappa (Graduate Honorary), Epsilon Pi Tau (Industrial Technology Honorary), and received a Laureate Citation in 1992. Survivors include his twin children, son: Stephen M. Baker, of Columbus, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law: Beth (Ron) Seizert, of Two Rivers, WI; stepchildren: Shelton (DiAnn) Collier, of Matthews, North Carolina; Susie Collier, of Columbus, Ohio; Jane Collier, of Columbus, Ohio; first wife and mother of his children: Joyce Baker, of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren: Matthew (Katrina) Hacker, Jeramie Baker, Travis Baker, Sarah Baker, all of Columbus, Ohio; Olivia Seizert, of Manitowoc, WI, and Sterling (Rebecca) Seizert, of Spring Lake, North Carolina; and eight great-grandchildren: November Seizert, Memphys Seizert, October Seizert, all of WI; Kayleigh Baker, Kayden Hacker, Carter Hacker, all of Columbus, Ohio; Sydney Seizert and Nora Seizert, of Spring Lake, N.C. He is also survived by special cousins Amy Baker and Celia Baker, both of Columbus, Ohio. Other relatives and friends also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half brother: Benton Baker; his daughter-in-law: Gina Baker; and his second wife and mother of his step-children: Joan Collier Baker. Cremation has occurred at the All-Care Cremation Center in Manitowoc, WI. Marvin will be laid to rest on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Westerville, Ohio at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Marvin and Joan adopted several rescued dogs that had been abused.
