Mary Elizabeth Moffatt Williams, 86, entered the church triumphant on July 21, 2023 surrounded by her children. She follows her beloved husband of 56 years, Gerald R. Williams as well as her darling younger sisters, Sandie and Janet. She will forever be in the hearts of her family: her son Matthew James Williams of Huatulco, Mexico and Surfside, Texas, her daughter Tara Leigh Williams of Bethesda, Maryland, her brother John Moffatt of Dayton, Ohio, her adored grandchildren Elizabeth Grace Henke and Harrison James Henke, and her extended family of in-laws, nephews, nieces, and friends. She loved them all fiercely.
Elizabeth was born in Steubenville, Ohio on February 9, 1937 to Elizabeth and John Moffatt. She was the oldest of four. She graduated from Steubenville High School where she sang in the school choir. After spending two years at the College of Steubenville, she began her teaching career in Cleveland’s Shaker Heights School District. She spent a summer studying at Clemson University before completing her BA at The Ohio State University in 1960. While teaching in Upper Arlington, she fell in love with her next door neighbor, Jerry. Married in 1962, they were still treasuring their long, candlelit dinners until his death in 2018.
After a lifetime of community service, Elizabeth found the most meaning in her work on the board of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and in her service as a child advocate with CASA of Franklin County . She was member of Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club and an active member of Broad Street Presbyterian Church. She considered her 2002 mission trip to Peru the seminal point in her life.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful group of caregivers at Hospice of Central Ohio and Westminster-Thurber for their compassionate care and support. Additionally, they would like to thank Elizabeth’s wide circle of devoted friends whose loyal attention and compassion during the last few months were a safe shelter on the hard road of cancer.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in her name to the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra (promusicacolumbus.org) or a charity of their choice.
