Miss Millie... what a "servant of the Lord"!  We are blessed to have been Miss Millie's neighbors and friends at Stoutsville Camp for the last two decades. What a joy!
     Miss Millie's first love was Jesus and that was evident in her words and deeds; her love to share the witness calendars extended through us into Kentucky, every year she sent us 500 to send to our family, friends, and to share throughout our community.
     She was a prayer warrior.  Whenever we left camp for the 350 mile drive home, the three of us would pray, one for the other, and once we left she would pray until the Lord told her we were home safely. She was obedient to the Lord, what an example!     As campers, we shared many meals together, she especially liked the fresh veggies from our garden.
     Miss Millie so loved her family and shared the news of her sons, Myron and Byron with motherly pride in them and their families.
     We travel through South Carolina every January and had the opportunity to visit with Miss Millie at the healthcare center near Myron for the last two years.  Her sweet spirit was not dimmed and when we entered her room, she recognized our voices and welcomed us, wanting to chat and pray for and with us. She reminisced about her past at Rockwell and of her family and always talked about Stoutsville camp.  We remember her favorite part of Stoutsville Camp- the 7:30 AM Prayer Service and her prayers for all of us.  What a prayer warrior!
     We are better for having known Miss Millie and stronger in our faith for her example.  We have made a donation to Stoutsville Camp to honor her memory.
     Our prayers go to God on behalf of Myron and Byron and the entire extended family in this season of grief, that God will put a hedge of protection surrounding you and that He will comfort, guide and protect you.  We know Miss Millie is rejoicing in Heaven with her new eyesight and all that her glorified body brings.  We'll see her soon, in The Lord's timing.

I enjoyed living near the Arledge family on Swansea Rd as a child. Myron and Byron were especially kind to me and helping to deliver the Dispatch with them led to my first job! I had lost track of the family over the years, and am sorry to hear of your mothers death. My sympathies to the whole family on the loss of a wonderful woman.

What a Lady!! I always enjoyed talking to Mildred and Wenrick when they came to visit their Aunt Eunice Goodman when she lived in Laurelville. Then when Eunice was living with us, they came here to see her. They were such great people. Wenrick was so much fun and Mildred such a refined woman. Millie. Her Memory.   

Millie had about 60 friends and relatives to whom she sent Christmas cards.  She kept addresses of these folk in big script on plain sheets of typing paper, return addresses from letters,  the church directory and local telephone directory on book shelves beside the dining room table where she read and wrote. One year my wife Julie and I decided we could shorten the process (about 4 hours) if we put everything on computer. Although her vision was pretty poor her memory was sharp. When I had trouble recognizing the script or the address Millie would say it, spell it and tell me how the individual was related or connected and sometimes would correct the address if the person had moved.  Amazing.  She had a phenomenal  grasp of the family tree right down to who was most likely to get married next.

Mike Latella usually took Millie on the annual trip in autumn into Southeastern Ohio where the small pocket calendars with the Bible verse would be delivered to businesses along the way. Mike was not able to make it for the last run she made before she moved to South Carolina so I filled in. The trip went from Upper Arlington to Circleville, to Stoutsville, to Tarlton (Ice cream stop) to Laurelville, and ended at Grandma Faye's Grocery at Old Man's cave.  Her eyesight was really bad now but here is a sample conversation:

Roland: "Where are we going next?"
Millie: "Turn left at 664, keep going until you get to the top of ridge and the road makes a big curve to the right. The store is on the left. You can't miss it."
Roland: "Now where to?"
Millie: "There should be a big red barn on the right. I want to stop at the restaurant about a mile beyond that. It is set back from the road and has head-in parking. They have great pie there.
Roland:  "How many calendars are we taking out of this box and putting into the envelopes?"
Millie: The general store gets 500, the candy shop at Circleville gets 750. Grandma Fayes, 600.......and for the prison ministry, they will only allow 700 at a time. So we will mail two envelopes separately and put 700 in each."
Roland: "Millie we are at the candy shop."
Millie: "Go into the store, stay on the left side, go back three aisles, look at the middle shelf. They have candy bars by the box. We will need about 10 dozen candy bars for the kids"

Well, you get the picture. One day she mapped out explicit directions to get to the origin of the Scioto River, near the Price family homestead and Indian Lake. She was so specific that she included the drainage ditch tile as a marker off the road.

Millie. Her Faith and Prayer Life.

On her front porch at Stoutsville, in the screened section of her home, at the table, on the couch and over the phone; there was always time for prayer.  She prayed for the nation, her church and Stoutsville Camp; for friends and relatives and her children and their families; for those in trouble, for people needing jobs, for decisions to be made, for people who were ill, for those in every type of need.  For safety in travel. Nothing was too great or too small. She prayed for the future.

"The Lord and I have good conversation. Sometimes I sit out here for hours and talk with Him."  Perhaps her devotion to prayer began with the example set by her dad.
Millie said when she was young she was very ill and the future was not promising. She said her father went out and had a long talk with the Lord. Millie got better and had excellent health for most of her life.
Sometimes I sensed her prayer was conversational. Other times I think she took her cue from Luke 18-the widow and the unjust judge story: The unjust judge said: "Even though I do not fear God or care about men, this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so she won't eventually wear me out...And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says and will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night?"

I had the privilege of being one of the kids that Mrs. Arledge regularly included in her monthly visits to Alum Crest. Those Sunday afternoons remain among some of my favorite memories. I learned so much from her and the way she so generously showed and shared God's love. All who knew her were richly blessed by her loving spirit. 

I am thinking of the words of a favorite hymn that so reminds me of your mother: 
"When all my labors and trials are o’er, And I am safe on that beautiful shore,
Just to be near the dear Lord I adore, Will through the ages be glory for me." 

I thank God for the life and influence of Mildred Arledge. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Myron and Byron, and your families.

Lit a candle in memory of Mildred Price Arledge

Mildred was one of the most remarkable people I have known. Her faith and fortitude will be her legacy to her friends and family. Her distribution of pocket calendars, monthly visits to the nursing home, care of her dear husband during his illness and abiding love for her beloved sons Byron and Myron, together with their families, have left a deep impression on me. God bless and comfort her family! Wayne Nicholson
