Paul was born on May 2, 1955 to the late Margaret “Peg” and Julius “Jules” Amling. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Julie, and their children Megan (Arthur Bowman) and Alexander (Maggie Poletti); six siblings, Marion (Ed Hoover), Louise (David) Taymans, Catherine (Paul) Martin, Hilary (Shawn) Dodson, Ted Amling, and Leslie (David) Lyon; 16 nieces and nephews, and many, many other loving relatives and dear friends.
Paul cherished his time with family and friends more than anything else and, like his beloved father, always prioritized experiences over possessions. His favorite memories were of holiday gatherings, family vacations, his children’s activities, group bicycle rides, ski trips, the ocean, and a spree of recent “bucket list” travels with his wife, Julie. Kind to and interested in everyone, Paul brought joy to many as a gifted piano player, a reliable friend and an inexhaustible conversationalist. He loved reading, listening to music, attending live performances, and photographing scenes of his travels and sunsets from his backyard. Friends will smile to remember that he was also adamant about recycling, driving under the speed limit, and completing tasks via old-fashioned, usually painstakingly manual, methods. The stories of his endeavors and adventures are endless and entertaining. Ask anyone who met him.
Paul graduated from Bishop Ready High School in 1973 and received his degree in electrical engineering from Ohio State in 1978. He worked in software quality assurance for several companies, including CompuServe and its subsequent entities, Rockwell International in Cleveland, and Nationwide Insurance. He had just retired in July of 2023.
Concurrent to his professional career, Paul served as a high school volleyball referee for more than 30 years, as a lifeguard at the Upper Arlington pools for more than 10 years; and most recently as a Red Coat at the OSU home football games. He was a lifelong learner, researching his German and Irish genealogy, completing daily German lessons, and had, on average, 50 books checked out of various libraries across the city at any given time.
Services will be held at Schoedinger Northwest at 1740 Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington on Monday, January 13 at 12:00 noon, with visitation following from 1:00-3:00. Burial services will be conducted the following day at 10:30 at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 6440 S. High Street in Lockbourne OH. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Upper Arlington Public Library.
