

Paul L. Carney, age 88, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2013 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 9, 1925 in San Francisco, CA to the late John and Josephine Carney; also preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen and siblings, the Rev. John Carney and Helen Fry. Paul bravely volunteered at the age of 18 to join the United States Marine Corps, and was sent to Guam, where he remained until the end of WWII. His love of math and statistics took him to the University of San Francisco where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He took a civil service position in Japan as an auditor. In 1958, Paul re-enlisted in the military, this time in the U.S.A.F., travelled extensively, and retired with a total of 24 years of military service. He returned to college at the University of Utah, where he earned a Master’s degree in Human Resources. Paul retired from DCSC as a supervisory auditor in 1989. He was a member of Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal since 1967 and a true sports enthusiast; he loved horseracing, football, baseball, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Paul will also be remembered for his tomatoes and roses, his love of classic movies and his devotion to his family and Catholic Faith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Anna (Oppl) Carney, whom he met while stationed in Germany; children, Josephine (Jeffrey) Boston, Maureen (Stephen) Cronin and Paul (Catherine) Carney; grandchildren; John, Paul, Ann, Lauren, Stevie, Rose and Maura Grace; sisters, Jane Lanctot and Loretta Flohr; brother-in-law Joseph (Ursula) Oppl; sisters-in-law Evelyn (Joseph) Barta and Marian Phillip; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8pm (prayer service at 7:30) Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Schoedinger East Chapel, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, OH 43232. Mass of Christian Burial 10am Thursday at Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, 5225 Refugee Rd., Columbus, OH 43232 with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery; Rev. James Coleman, Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be to Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Paul’s memory.
