Only recently did I hear of Phil’s passing and that of his mother’s, Frances.   I worked for Phil at Hydrofarm from 1997 to 2001.   Phil became my friend instantly.  He helped me through some of the toughest times of my life, and he put me in touch with others he knew that could help.  Just like some of the items we sold, Phil was one of the brightest lights I will ever encounter.  One of his most outstanding traits: He had a sense of humor all his own that would leave us laughing to the point of tears.   A natural leader, he could take command of situations and work everything out perfectly.   He taught by demonstration.  And what a loveable and loving guy.  As it turned out, we had friends in common, but this is how I met him:  I was visiting his store for the first time and while looking around, another customer asked me a question thinking I was an employee. I answered his question and explained some options, and after I was finished, around the endcap of an aisle came Phil with a big smile and a handshake.  He said, “Want a job here?”  I said, “Can I start tomorrow?”  He said yes, and a friendship was born.   I wish I could share some of the antics that we got into, but I can tell you he made life great.  I shall always remember how much he loved and adored his daughter, Hannah.  She was his world.   He shared her accomplishments with us all the time, and she loved to come in and hang out at the store.   How much she must miss him!  My heart goes out to you, Hannah.   Your father was great man and your grandmother, a sweetheart.  When I think of you, that little kid I knew, and now without those two, I want you to know that you are forever loved, and that they will always be in your heart.  May you have the blessings of their limitless love and may it carry you into a wondrous future full of love, light and laughter.

Hannah, so sorry to hear about your Dad. I am sorry I never met him because you and so many others describe him as such a fun-loving, spirited man. By the way you spoke about him it certainly sounds like he was a fantastic father too. We will make a gift in his memory. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you.

Phil was one of a kind and will be missed! His personality was as big as he was. He never met a stranger and made everyone feel welcome and wanted. Wishing you all much comfort and peace in the coming days.

Fireside Basket - Seasonal Garden was purchased for the family of Philip Charles Orendorff.

I will replay laughter in my head from being with Phil....beginning with becoming my neighbor and best friend in 6th grade.  Every day I'd walk to his house in the morning, with time to spare, just to end up watching the Today Show with Abe and Eddie, and being tardy because Phil couldn't get to school on time.  From a half block away!!!!  He was there for me when I was sick during those years....his love was always appreciated.  I'll really miss him.

Phil signed my Cub yearbook while I was in the hospital.

I remember Phil as a tow headed blond who loved to get into trouble with his brother John.  I watched the two one summer while their mom worked at a church down the block from us, I loved them as if they were my own brothers.  I send my deepest sympathy and prayers to all of Phil's family.  He was a great kid so I am sure he was a wonderful man.

Phil, you never had a negative word to say about anybody, rest in peace old friend.

Phil, what a wonderful man you have been.  A great guy, a guy that made me laugh every time I was with him.  God bless my friend and to Hannah and family as well

Phil you are truly one of a kind. I will cherish your smile your Brown eyes and bald head. We  love you. Don't have too much fun up there save some for us when we meet again. Prayers for your family. RIP my dear. Love Maureen Gibboney and Sean Heer.

Peace to you, Phil, and to your loving family. I have nothing but the fondest of memories growing up down the block from you on Stanwood. Always appreciated your irreverent sense of humor. This is a big loss.
