Reba Jividen Alton died peacefully at her home in Upper Arlington on March 23, 2024. Raised in the South End’s Merion Village during the Great Depression and World War II, Reba graduated from Columbus South High School on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Gifted from childhood with an exceptionally beautiful singing voice, she used her talent, over six decades, to praise her Savior as a soprano soloist at churches throughout the city.
She is survived by children John (Peggy), Elaine, and Nancy; grandchildren Jeff, Jay (Evelyn), Julie (Aaron) Renato, and Caroline (Jude) Fitzgerald; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, attorney Jack Alton; parents John and Iva Dewees Jividen; and siblings Carl Jividen, Ann Holderman, and Ruth Esswein.
Reba placed her family first in her life, throughout her life. Her dedicated care for those she loved was selfless and untiring. In these and so many ways, she let her light so shine before men that they saw her good works and glorified her Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
A private graveside service at Green Lawn Cemetery is planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio at ohioshospice.org/donate, or to Wycliffe Bible Translators at wycliffe.org/donate. “Her life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
She hears the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
The peace of Christ makes fresh her heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are hers since she is His—
How can she keep from singing?”
