Rex Heald Elliott, age 78, died on August 12, 2015 following a long and truly inspirational fight for his life that began with injuries sustained in a car accident on May 16, 2015. As he did throughout his remarkable 78 years, he showed extraordinary strength and an unparalleled desire to remain with his loving family. Rex graduated from the Columbus Academy in 1955, attended Denison University where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and thereafter The Ohio State University. He was a former Board Member of the Bexley-Whitehall Rotary, member of the 41 Club, a founder of the Bexley Youth Sports Association, a deep believer in God and an active participant at St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Rex operated his own insurance business for the bulk of his professional life but he truly viewed his wife and family as his passion and priority. He cherished attending the athletic events of his sons and grandchildren, he looked forward to the 4th of July where he could host so many in his front yard as the Bexley Parade passed by and there was no more diehard fan of The Ohio State University football and basketball programs than he was. In fact, The Buckeye Battle Cry could be heard on any given day emanating from his childhood home at 386 North Parkview Avenue, the family farm that his Father named "Maryland" after Rex's mother or from his Bexley homes on North Cassingham Road and North Roosevelt Avenue. Rex also loved nothing more than to hug and kiss his family members and to embrace even the most casual acquaintance. Rex was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Raymond "Spike" Elliott, his mother, Mary Heald Elliott, his sister Priscilla Elliott Ebinger, his brother-in-law Elbert Charles Ebinger, his nephew Elliott Charles Ebinger and the love of his life, his dear wife of 48 years Betty Ann Elliott, whom he never let go following her transition into eternal life on July 28, 2009. To this end, their Bexley home remains exactly as it was the day Betty Ann died. Rex is survived by many adoring family members including his sons and "the daughters he never had," Rex (Samantha) Elliott, David (Lisa) Elliott, and Preston (Jill) Elliott and his extraordinary grandchildren, Ashley, Alexandra, Gabrielle, Reese, Drew, Caroline, Annie, Grace and Jack Elliott. Rex is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Gretchen Hull (Byron), Nancy Jones (Bruce), nieces Holly Ellenberger (Brad) and Mary Pris Ebinger (Mike), nephews Phillip Ebinger (Beth), George Ebinger, Frank Vokoun and Preston Jones and cousin Sally Sieg (Ken). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 333 South Drexel Avenue, Bexley, Ohio 43209. The family will also receive friends on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Schoedinger Midtown Chapel, 229 East State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Perhaps most important, Rex's family would like to express eternal gratitude to the many Doctors, Nurses and Medical Staff in the ICU/CCU at Grant Medical Center. They are not only heroic healers, they are compassionate, caring and superhuman in our view. We are moved beyond words at your skill and the care and treatment you gave our Father over the past 14 weeks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Bexley Community Foundation located at 552 South Drexel Avenue, Bexley, Ohio 43209 or the bexleycommunityfoundation.org website. Please visit www.schoedinger.com to offer condolences.
