Robert D. Grossman, formerly of Bexley, Ohio, died September 9, 2010, a thirty-five year resident of Woodstock, Illinois. He was born September 22, 1933 in Kewanee, Illinois, the second son of Elizabeth and Arthur Grossman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, John E. Grossman, also of Bexley. He is survived by his older brother, A. William Grossman, a niece, Elizabeth G. Davis, and a nephew, Arthur W. Grossman, Jr. Bob served two years in the United States Army, attached to the Eleventh Airborne Division. He was a graduate of Capital University and received an advanced degree in urban planning from The Ohio State University. He participated in the formulation of the Corpus Christie, Texas, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico city plans, and in 1978 he wrote and designed the comprehensive plan and map of the City of Woodstock. Bob will be remembered for his people-oriented ways: generous of his time and treasure, compassionate, cultured and congenial. He was an authority and collector of Native American art and artifacts, and a talented artist in his own right, especially of pen and ink drawings. Bob maintained his Bexley, Columbus, Capital and OSU roots through frequent visits to his brother John, University and Capital cultural events and Buckeye athletics. He was as knowledgeable about Wexner Center and Maya Lin’s “Groundswell” as he was thrilled by the happenings at Ohio Stadium or St. John’s Arena. In Woodstock, Bob will be remembered for his years promoting the restoration, preservation and programming at the Woodstock Opera House, a late nineteenth century structure that is enrolled on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitation will be held this Saturday, September 18, at the Forest Lawn Mausoleum Chapel, 5600 East Broad Street, Columbus, at 9:30 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Thomas A. Wolfe officiating. Bob will be interred with his parents and brother John. Donations in his memory may be made to Friends of The Opera House 121 Van Buren St. Woodstock, IL 60098.
