

Robert H Poirier, age 91, of Columbus. Born in Winooski, Vermont, on August 21, 1921, entered into eternal rest on December, 14, 2012, at his home. Bob was beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Preceded in death by parents, Hermas and Lena Poirier, son Michael, daughter-in-law Sandy, brother-in-law Fernand LaPlante. Survived by Joan, his wife of 68 years, sons Robert J (Marilynne) of Columbus, Denis (Deena) of Cleveland, and Deacon Donald (Julie) of Powell, many grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Also survived by sister, Jeanne LaPlante, of Winooski, Vermont, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
While growing up, Bob, a good student, also became an accomplished hockey player once playing in a tournament in the Boston Garden. He worked as a pinsetter and eventually became skilled at duckpin bowling. Local alleys would pay Bob to roll against all comers earning money to help with college tuition.
Bob graduated from St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont in 1944 with a degree in chemistry. His degree led to a draft deferment and work for the war effort developing synthetic rubber at Firestone in Akron, Ohio. While at Firestone, he earned his Masters degree from the University of Akron. After moving to Columbus to begin work at Battelle Memorial Institute in 1948, he completed his class work on his PhD at The Ohio State University. Up until his retirement in 1986, Bob authored many patents while holding several positions at Battelle including head of the chemistry department during his last 13 years before retirement. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, and family gatherings.
Bob and Joan were charter members of St. Peter Catholic Church, and previously of Immaculate Conception Church. Friends may call at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N High St., Worthington (just south of I-270) on Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 3-5pm. Mass of Christian Burial 1 p.m. on Monday, December 17, 2012 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 6899 Smoky Row Rd., Columbus, Monsignor John Johnson, celebrant. Entombment will immediately follow Mass at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Child Society of Columbus, PO Box 340091 Columbus, OH 43234-0091 in his memory.
