Thank you Roger for being such a great friend to my Dad, Serge.  He talked of you for years when I was a young kid and told stories of your antics together.  When I finally had a chance to meet you and see you two together, it was obvious you were the brother he never had.  When he became sick, your visits, your calls and just the mention of your name always put a smile on his face.  Now you two can be together to carry on!

I remember a time when uncles Roger and Selmer had come home from Ohio with their brand new Pontiac convertables back in the mid '60's. I was 16 and a brand new driver. Do you all remember flash cubes?  Well, my cousin Jerry and I were sent on a mission one fine Sunday to find some flash cubes for the camera and Uncle Roger let us use his car. After a few closed stores later, I mean what was open 45 years ago on a Sunday in Minot, we found Service Drug, which is now the Barley Pop on Broadway, and proceeded to drive around back to park.  We got the flash cubes and came out to find we had a flat tire.  Jerry and I fixed it, but for some reason failed to mention this to Roger. Now comes the funny part, when we finally did get back to Geanne and Vinces house in the Acres, Roger went over to Uncle Freds a couple of blocks away and when he came out he had another flat tire.  Needless to say, we got a call from Rog asking about his spare being flat? Then I fessed up and mentioned we may have run over some glass behind the drug store, you know those old bias ply tires just weren't the same as we have to day, and I had to drive into MInot to get his spare fixed. Uncle Rog took this all in stride and of course joked about it for many years.    And, he never let me borrow his car again.....go figure.

I'm still smiling - When I heard of Rogers passing, I was at work.  After some initial grieving, I started thinking about all of the awesome times I had growing up in Columbus with Roger and Mary and the rest of the ole neighborhood clan.  I had a smile on my face from the moment I got into my car, until now.  Although I could spend hours going over my fondest memories of Roger, I would like to share one that will always be "special" to me (and a few of my brothers and sisters).  It just shows you the power of laughter and fun, and how Roger could turn even the worst of situations into something you would be laughing about days, months, and even 36 years later!

The story goes like this - It is New Years Eve, and our neighborhood was having the New Years Eve party over at the Floms.  It was a little before midnight, and I had Andy (Drew) and Kevin Orr over at my house for a sleepover.  I think I was about 10 at the time, and dad put my sister Debbie in charge of babysitting for the evening.  Well, it WAS New Years Eve, and Debbie figured I was old enough to participate as a "backup" babysitter. Thus, she decided to go over to one of her girlfriends house for "just a minute".

Three hours later, I'm in the shower getting ready for bed, when Andy and Kevin pop in to tell me that our phone line had been cut, and the phone disconnected.  We had just finished watching a scary episode of "Chiller Theatre", and I, of course assumed the worst. So, being the diligent "backup" babysitter, I figured I needed to get the neighborhood kids (and my younger brother and sister) out of harms way. We truck on down the street in 20 degree temps, with 6 inches of snow on the ground, heading over to the Floms.  Not one of us had on a coat or jacket, and were lucky to have been wearing shoes.  I knock on the door and Roger answers.  He takes a look at us (perplexed as heck) and calls for my dad.  He says "Kenny, you gotta see this".  We come in the house and I tell him and dad our story.  By now, it is almost New Years Day, and I am sure dad and Roger had comsumed their fair share of adult beverages.  So, like the patriots our fathers were, they headed on down to my house to catch the "bad guys".  Of course there were none to be found, and my sister was still missing in action.  Pops was furious, but Roger took this as an opportunity to bring in a little humor to calm things down.  After Roger spends the next 10 minutes making light of the situation and telling a few good jokes to dad, everything was now "OK", and the night continued on with laughter and fun . . . . like it had many, many other times before.

I'll never, ever forget this special memory, nor the many other times Rogers laughter would keep me up at night when the Friday Night Poker Party was over at The Saul's.  I would actually sit on the top stairs (could not be seen) going down into the basement so I could hear some of Rogers jokes and "stories".

His laughter and love of life is what I remember most. And, although I am truly saddened by our loss . . . .  just can't stop smiling.

All my life I heard stories about Roger, most of them pretty wild.  Then one day I was old enough to "create" my own stories and memories WITH Roger.  Some of those are kind of wild too.  What good times we had when we met in Minneapolis for football games. What a great time it was when Mom and I went to Ohio to celebrate his 70th birthday with him and his wonderful family.  

I will never forget the look in my dad's eyes and the tone of his voice when he talked of Roger.  It was a true look and sound of love for a best friend.  He often got tears in his eyes when he talked about what a good friend Roger was to him for so many years. He also talked about how the whole "Flom Clan" took him in as a sibling and how much that meant to him since he didn't have any siblings. I still  have the t-shirt the Floms gave Dad at a family reunion that says, "Flom By Choice".

Dad relished in the fact that his own family loved and got along with Roger and his family so well.  I am grateful that Roger and I have kept in touch these past seven years after Dad's death.  I am grateful that I spoke to him about one month ago.  He always had so much love in his voice when he told me about his family.

My heart goes out to the entire family at the loss of such a wonderful man.  I believe that my mother is thrilled to have Roger up in heaven with Dad so that the boys can once again "play together."  I'm sure that they are pounding down a few beers right now talking about old times.

I totally understand why my dad always had that look in his eyes and that sound in his voice when he talked of Roger Flom!  I feel the same way.

I will miss Uncle Roger so much...I have so many memories to carry in my heart. One recent one was when I called to thank you, Mary,  and him for one of my many gifts from you and he answered and I said " Is this my Uncle Roger? and he said "it could be, I am uncle to many":) He loved his family unconditionally, and I loved him in the same way...
Mary, you were his rock and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for your unconditional love for him and your caring for him with such grace.

We so sorry to hear that Roger past away. We spent a lot of time with Roger inn Hawaii.

Our daughter was born in Tripler Army Hospital, at the same time Roger was in a  car accident. He was in the same hospital. He told the nurses that he was sent up to the maternity ward to feed the babies, he did get to see Oveda and our daughter,and was usherd out very fast.
