Oh, Ruby, I just now learned of your passing. We were neighbors for many years, and you were practically family. You were a treasure. The world is a little colder now without your warm, loving light. Say hi to Les for Mom, Dad, Chris, and me.

It's hard to believe it has been almost a month since you left us.  I will miss our visits on my trips to Ohio..you were always a big part of them.  You have always been an inspiration to me and I miss you everyday.  I am sad we didn't get to say goodbye.  I hope you and Lester are dancing together once again.

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, so aptly named,  a true gem. When she said let's go across the street to see the hornet's nest,  I thought she might be off her rocker, who wants to go close to a swarm of hornets. But  never a rocker for Ruby,  she would be out square dancing. I went and the hornet's nest was so amazing.  She even had another one on top of her piano (dried without the hornets,  (of course.)  She told me every morning she would sit up, put her legs  on the floor and say, "Wow, I have made it another day, Thank you God." She now can rest on a cloud, swing her legs around in the sky below and say, "Wow, Thank you Lord,  heaven was worth the wait."

Aunt Ruby was only seven moms older than her niece, Garnet Short Ward (daughter of Russell Short).  They spoke via phone weekly & always shared fond memories of growing up in eastern Kentucky.  They talked about carrying lunch to the family men who were working at the head of Short Branch.  They talked about going to revival & being told not to go up front when the preacher called for sinners to be saved & Aunt Ruby said, "I will if I want to!"   Anyone with Short blood running through his/her veins has that "independent Short streak", which includes me, too.  She was always "upbeat" & fun to be around.  Of course, she was an OSU fan but also a UK fan.  We loved her & will miss her greatly - my mother, especially, who is 93 years old.

About 65 years ago, you and Lester entered the life of the Kline family and the memories began. Becoming best friends with my parents and living only two houses away you integrated yourselves with us.You were there for every major event in my life: school plays (Lester designed and sewed my outfit for the Spring festival), holidays (your presents were always the most beautiful under the tree), vacations, graduations, weddings, the passing of my parents, and the birth of my son, Jason, whom you welcomed and loved as if he were your own. Though distance was between us we shared a spiritual bond that will never be broken. I miss you so much already. You probably are 
cooking Lester some fried chicken, green beans and some apple pie about now. Enjoy your life in the cosmos, Ruby, and I'll see you when I see you. All of my love to you.  Karen

There are great women and then there is Aunt Ruby!  I spent most every summer at her and Uncle Lester's house in Columbus and they were hands down the best moments of my childhood.  She was such a loving and caring lady and although she never had children of her own she had many.  I learned how to host, drive a golf cart, play cards, play pool, play softly and tenderly on the organ, plant flowers, lay tile in the basement bath, and sit like a lady while out to dinner (that is an inside joke and I promise you she is laughing right now).  The best memories of the two of them are in the motor home when they would visit or I would get to go with them and this is where I found my love for camping and now every time we are camping I always think of the two of them.  I knew I had made it in life when I bought a home with an "Aunt Ruby" room, the blue fancy living room that only company went in. She never sent Christmas cards or birthday cards to me but would always call and give an "in person wish".  I missed that call this past Christmas and she left a voice mail. I called her back and we talked for a bit but I never erased that voice mail and now I never will. On the 20th I will be getting a Frog tattoo to celebrate her life and to honor her.  I know she is probably already has a tee time in heaven and is cleaning her clubs and so happy to be reunited with Uncle Lester.  I love you forever Aunt Ruby!

Ruby and her sister Nori  were two of  the nicest people I  have  met in my life. I will always remember how kind and gracious they were and a lot of fun to be around. Tommy and I will miss you  thou we didn't get to see each  other as much as we would have liked ,loved talking  you by phone. Love TOMMY AND WILMA

Goodbye Aunt Ruby....you were always so special to me and my family and we loved you dearly.  You were like a sister to my father Clyde Phelps(your nephew who was only 6 months younger than you) and remained a close friend to my mother Sue until your passing.  While it saddens me to see you go, I can definitely take comfort in knowing that you lived a life that most people would envy.  Your independence and determination has always been and will continue to be an inspiration to me.  Rest well my dearest of great aunts....you were loved dearly!
