Steve was born on October 1, 1944, in Akron, Ohio, the oldest child of John Puntenney Smith, M.D., and Jean Miller Smith. From an early age he showed the great curiosity that would define him – a mind always reaching outward, toward nature, toward people, toward the next interesting thing.
After earning his B.S. from Colby College in 1966, Steve went on to receive his M.D. from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1970. He completed his surgical internship and residency at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital after which he proudly served as a Major in the U.S. Army. Following his service he completed his urological residency at the University of Maryland and a fellowship in Pediatric Urology at Northwestern University’s Children’s Memorial Hospital.
Steve settled in Upper Arlington and built a distinguished career as an adult and pediatric urologist spanning more than four decades. He was elected President of the Medical Staff at Mt. Carmel Medical System in 1995. He served on many professional boards, including Medigold, and was elected as a faculty member to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Teaching was not a sideline – it was a calling. He served in various capacities as an instructor at Children’s, Mount Carmel and Ohio State University hospitals, finishing as Clinical Assistant Professor at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. He was also a proud member of Gyro Club, Medical Forum, Zanesfield Fishing Club, and Rocky Fork and Scioto country clubs.
Steve was an artist in many ways. He loved painting, drawing and photography and applied these skills and sensitivities as a surgeon. Above all Steve was the example of family love and devotion. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Rae Mackey Smith (Twink); his siblings, Sheryl Smith Seltzer, Susan Smith Shages (Robert), Sara Smith Harris (Alan); his children, Stephen Smith Jr. (Nevada), Jennifer Smith (John Little), Andrew Smith (Ashley), and Scott Smith (Emily); and his grandchildren, Charlotte Smith-Gold (Noah), Averill Smith, Blaine Smith, Vivienne Little, Violet Little, Rhuiana Smith, Oliver Smith, Matilda Smith, Miller Smith, Paige Smith and Lily Smith.
