Thomas “Tom” Robert Herbster, proud husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2022 at St. Ann’s Hospital, at the age of 79. Although his death was sudden, the memories he helped to make will stay with the people in his life indefinitely. Born on January 3, 1943 to the late Robert Alton and Pearl Irene Hosler Herbster, Tom was known to share stories of his younger days growing up on the west side of Columbus along with his sisters, Barbara and Carol. Tom spent his childhood interested in drawing, coins, sports, and cars. He attended West High School before heading to The Ohio State University to study architecture. Many churches, schools and office buildings around Central Ohio are a product of his time and dedication with Big Bear Stores and various architecture firms, including Holroyd & Myers and Meacham & Apel. The man had an attention to detail that carried over to every aspect of his life.
Nobody, including Tom, could ever quite make sense of how he managed to catch the eye of a young Susan (Cox) from Parkersburg, WV. Perhaps it was his style…his charm…his wit? One thing was for sure, Tom always recognized that he lucked out in the wife department.
Living in Sharon Woods, Tom and Susan’s life together centered around their children and enjoying the company of friends including over four decades of monthly get-togethers with dinner group. As time went on, Tom could often be seen rocking on the porch with a golden retriever at his feet. When given the choice of how to celebrate any occasion, he opted for grilling a bacon-wrapped filet from Carfagna’s followed by kicking back with a Manhattan made just the way he liked it. He never met a stranger and loved to share a good story. No one has been more loyal to a business or a brand than Tom Herbster. You are welcome, Pepsi! From Hot Wheels to Hondas, the guy knew what he liked. And if you worked at Roush Honda, Home Depot, Huntington Bank, and Key Blue Prints, then you were probably fortunate enough to have him pop in on occasion with a box of Krispy Kreme just to say hello.
You would be hard-pressed to find a person who valued tradition or his family heritage more. Tom never missed the chance to call you on your birthday, visit his ancestral roots in Put-In-Bay, drive up to Findlay for a family reunion, hike the hills of Granville each Christmas in search of the perfect tree, or load the car for the trek to Florida to spend time with the ones he loved.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Pearl. He is survived by his wife Susan; children Cara (Tom) Hering, Chris (Heather) Herbster, Kelly (Justin) Jacobson; grandchildren Rowan, Reagan, Simon, Sydney, Grant, Nora, Oscar, Charlie and Evelyn; and his faithful dog, Bailey.
His family will receive friends from 6:00pm-8:00pm Monday, April 25th at Schoedinger North, 5554 Karl Rd where his Funeral Service will be at 10am Tuesday, April 26th. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Charity Newsies in his memory (https://charitynewsies.org/). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
