Thomas M. Smurr

Thomas M. Smurr, age 95, passed away August 31, 2025. Survived by children Michael (Susan) Smurr, Janet (David) Brooks, Mary (Bruce) Osani and Sharon (Paul) Zeis; grandchildren Emma (Fox), Tom (Bre), Truman, Anna (Josiah), Jacob, Sarah (Paul), Rebekah, Leah, Ben, Mikala (Dylan), Emily (Grant), Josh, Evan, Steven; great grandchildren Henry, Lewis, Clark, Audrey, Malcolm, Michael, Lola along with many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by wife Marjorie, son Steven, granddaughter Ariel, and siblings Martha Ida, James and John.

Tom graduated from The Ohio State University in 1952. An avid Ohio State Buckeye football fan, he has been a season ticket holder since 1956. After graduation, Tom joined the Navy, honorably serving his country for two years. Tom began working for Hanna Paint in 1954 and remained a stellar sales representative until his retirement in 1994. His business acumen was a valuable asset when he served on the Board of Directors of Cedar Enterprises, a successful Wendy’s franchise.

Tom met Marge, the love of his life, in 1952, was engaged in 1954, married in 1956 and began their family in 1957. They celebrated 60 years of marriage just prior to Marge’s passing in 2016.

Life-long residents of Columbus, they lived for over 55 years in Upper Arlington, where their life was centered around raising their five children. Their house was known for friendly gatherings where everyone was welcome. Along with his children’s scouting, sporting, dancing and band events, and attending the many activities of his grandchildren, Tom was a faithful member of St. Andrew Catholic Parish in Upper Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Marjorie Smurr or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tom’s name.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 8, 2025 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Columbus, Ohio 43220. Interment at Union Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
